Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 8, 2010 Area Carol Motyka-Miller of Waldwick and Beth Carey of Upper Saddle River recently earned gold medals at the 13th FINA World Master’s Swimming Championships in Sweden. The two women are long-time members of the Ridgewood Aquacons, the synchronized swimming team that has made its home at the YWCA of Bergen County since 1959. Motyka-Miller and Beth Carey, swim partners for over 20 years, placed first in the duet category for competitors between age 70 and 79. Carey also placed third in the solo event for the same age category. Motyka-Miller has been a member of the Aquacons for over 40 years, and both women are also members of the Ramapo Aquamasters, a competitive synchronized Synchronized swimmers earn gold in competition swim team that trains at Rockland Community College. The women were among the 440 swimmers from 16 countries who competed in the synchronized competition at the world championships, which drew over 6,000 competitors for events including speed swimming, water polo, diving, and open water swimming. Often considered a specialized sport that is showcased at the Olympics, synchronized swimming is actually an accessible alternative to more traditional aqua exercise programs. The Aquacons welcome new swimmers to their weekly practice sessions (Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m.) at the YWCA’s Habernickel pool, where women ranging in age from 20 to 80 swim to music using water ballet figures, sculling, and swim strokes. Practices culminate in a show each June that is open to the public. This fall, the YWCA is also offering a youth synchronized swimming class for ages 7 to 12, led by choreographer, Aquacon, and master swimmer Laura Alt. The eight-week program focuses on swimming skills, rhythm, underwater skills, and figures. The class will meet on Fridays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood.
