On a mission
John Kafafian
For the sixth year in a row, teens from Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church participated in a week-long Group Work Camp mission to serve the needy during summer break. This year they traveled to Wilkinsburg, PA, a depressed area outside the eastern city limits of Pittsburgh, joined by youth groups from Delaware, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey and New York. With monies raised from the OPRC congregation and a community-wide Pancake Breakfast, the OPRC youths purchased almost 600 cans of food for a local Pittsburgh food pantry. Then they took on tasks such as demolition and reconstruction of a deteriorating church; hearty outdoor work cleaning debris, weeding and painting at abandoned houses; helping at an affordable day camp for area children; and interaction with children at a Boys’ and Girls’ Club, and with elderly residents at a skilled nursing facility. Total hours of service by all 95 campers and adults amounted to 2,200 hours. “We were all moved and forever changed after spending a week together,” the OPRC group commented.
