Non-compliance leads to water shut-offs in borough
by Jennifer Crusco Approximately 10 Ho-Ho-Kus homeowners recently experienced a water shut-off after they were found to be watering their properties on Monday. Ho-Ho-Kus does not permit outdoor watering on Monday, the day when the borough’s water storage tanks are permitted to refill. Borough resident Phoebe Flemming, wife of Councilman Lee Flemming, commented on the shut-offs at last week’s public session. Mrs. Flemming said some people had their water service turned off at the street, and some people woke up without water. She asserted that the water utility employees should have knocked on people’s doors before shutting off their water service. Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli told Villadom TIMES the municipality’s residents had been reminded that no watering is permitted on Monday. He said Reverse 911 calls and flyers were sent out to advise people to comply with this regulation. “We created the new watering schedule (in July), but people were still watering on Mondays,” Cirulli said, adding that the problem was widespread. While some residents use sprinkler systems that run on timers, borough officials note that the use of such systems must be halted on Monday. Citizens who use landscaping companies are urged to advise their landscapers of the borough’s restriction. Cirulli said the borough shares the use of the local aquifer with other local municipalities, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulates each municipality’s use of water. Ho-Ho-Kus, he said, must pump less than 30 million gallons per month. “In the busier months, they don’t want water usage higher than one million gallons a day,” Cirulli said, pointing out that exceeding this standard puts the borough in line for steep fines. Cirulli said the homeowners who had their water supply shut off have been advised to obey the law. In one case, he said, the water utility’s work led to the exposure of an old valve, which broke. The crew advised the homeowner, and installed a new pipe and valve. (continued on page 19)
