Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 1, 2010 Allendale McCarthy is officer in charge; organization under review by John Koster The Allendale Borough Council has appointed Sergeant Al McCarthy as officer in charge of the police department through 2010. McCarthy, 61, is a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army Reserve veteran. He holds two college degrees in policerelated subjects. McCarthy will remain officer in charge through Dec. 31. Mayor Vince Barra said that, of the four sergeants now on the force, three had requested a tour as officer in charge for evaluation as a possible future chief. McCarthy, the senior officer, was deemed the best choice of the first tour. The other sergeants will also have a tour before the council decides whether to appoint a police chief, appoint a public safety director, or share services with another department and share a chief. The council tabled the ordinance that would have provided for either a police chief or public safety director in charge of the police department in the future. Mayor Vince Barra said detailed plans for shared services to save money might not be implemented for four, five, or six months or more and agreed that he would prefer to see Allendale handle dispatch services for other towns, rather than farming out that service out to other departments.
