The ESL Conversation Group, which will meet on Mondays at 10:15 a.m. beginning Sept. 13, features guided discussions about world news events and topics of personal interest. English Language Learning Activities will meet on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. beginning Sept. 14. This program emphasizes skill development in reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. Band announces September performance The Waldwick Band, under the baton of Edmund A. Moderacki, will conclude its summer season with a concert on Friday evening, Sept. 3 in the parking lot of Hudson City Savings Bank on East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Audience members should bring their own seating for this 8 p.m. performance, which is free of charge. In the event of rain, the concert will be postponed until Sept. 10. Weather updates for this event will be available at www.waldwickband.org. The featured work at the concert will be Gordon Jacob’s “Music for a Festival.” Also on then program will be “Festivity” by James Curnow, “Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Strauss, and Robert Russell Bennett’s arrangement of music by Cole Porter. The Waldwick Band’s saxophone quartet will perform two works, and marches by Carl Teike, Karl King, and Kenneth Alford will complete the program. The Waldwick Band will perform a different program on Monday evening, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. as they perform for the Closter Labor Day Fireworks. The 7 p.m. concert will take place at Memorial Field on High Street in Closter and is also free to the public. Marriage counseling available Waldwick United Methodist Church is offering Christian marriage counseling to couples who are seeking help with their marriages, and to those planning to enter into marriage. Book Club to discuss ‘Swan Thieves’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “Swan Thieves” by Elizabeth Kostova on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 7:15 p.m. In this follow-up to her blockbuster debut novel about the undead (“The Historian,” 2005), Kostova presents a romance about a contemporary painter’s obsession with an undiscovered 19th century Impressionist. Copies of the book are available at the library’s circulation desk. The book club welcomes new members and drop-ins regardless of residency. Future Daisy Scouts sought The Waldwick Girl Scouts organization invites all girls who will be entering kindergarten to be part of the Girl Scouting experience. A registration for Daisy Girl Scouts will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Waldwick Ambulance Corps building located at 20 Whites Lane in Waldwick. Scouting provides opportunities for girls to develop friendships while participating in field trips, sports skill building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships. Lions host Golf Classic The Waldwick Lions Club will once again host its annual team Golf Classic at Bowling Green Golf Club on Monday, Sept. 20. The event will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The event, a team and best-ball outing, will begin with skills competitions such as breaking a pane of glass by chipping, and putting contests. The entry fee includes free range balls, full breakfast, and lunch and libations along with giveaways and on-course performance prizes. Funds raised will go toward the more than $50,000 per year the Waldwick Lions Club donates to local causes and sight-related charities. Ambulance corps seeks new recruits The Waldwick Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which is comprised of trained members who provide the community with high quality ambulance service at no charge to the patient or the patient’s family, is seeking new volunteers. Since 1952, the Waldwick Ambulance Corps has been a privately-run volunteer service that depends upon volunteers to provide emergency care to the residents of Waldwick. Applications to join the corps are available at the Waldwick Police Department.
