Page 22 THE VILLADOM TIMES I & III • September 1, 2010 Reviewer previews sampling of autumn movie releases by Dennis Seuling As summer winds down, it’s time to look ahead to what the local theaters will be featuring in the next few months. The following sampling of fall releases runs the gamut from comedy to horror and features an array of stars. It is by no means a complete list. “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” is due for release on Sept. 22. Woody Allen kicks off the fall movie season with a look at two married couples, Alfie (Anthony Hopkins) and Helena (Gemma Jones), and their daughter Sally (Naomi Watts) and her husband Roy (Josh Brolin) as they undergo assorted crises, bare their anxieties, and follow their passions. Alfie leaves Helena to pursue his lost youth and takes up with a call girl named Charmaine (Lucy Punch). Helena reacts by seeking the advice of a charlatan fortune teller. Sally develops a crush on her handsome art gallery-owner boss Greg (Antonio Banderas), while novelist Roy, awaiting the response to his latest book, becomes entranced with Dia (Freida Pinto), a woman with whom he exchanges glances through a nearby window. In “Let Me In” (to be released Oct. 1), Chloe Moretz (“Kick-Ass”) stars as Abby, a secretive 12-year-old girl who moves next door to Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee, “The Road”), a social outcast who is viciously bullied at school. In his loneliness, Owen forms a bond with his new neighbor and notices that she is like no one he has ever met before. Stanley Tucci and Cher star in ‘Burlesque,’ scheduled for Thanksgiving release. Owen soon realizes that his seemingly innocent new friend is actually a savage vampire. “The Social Network” (Oct. 1). Written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher, the film chronicles the amazing but true rise of the social networking site Facebook from a laptop computer. One fall night in 2003, Harvard undergrad and computer programming wiz Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) sits down at his laptop and works on a new idea. What begins in his dorm room soon becomes a worldwide social network and revolutionizes communication. Six years later, Mark is the youngest billionaire in history, but he is beset by both personal and legal complications. Justin Timberlake and Andrew Garfield co-star. “The Company Men” (Oct. 22). Bobby Walker (Ben Affleck) is living the good life with a big house, a new Porsche, a beautiful wife, and two adoring kids. He is either in the office or out on the golf course clinching important business deals. His world is thrown into turmoil, however, when he becomes a victim of corporate downsizing and struggles with a diminishing sense of self-worth. The film follows Bobby and fellow laid-off co-workers Phil (Chris Cooper) and Gene (Tommy Lee Jones) as they make their way through uncharted waters. Director John Wells explores the powerlessness of losing one’s job while examining how anger, fear, and forced humility can replace the security of “normal.” “Morning Glory” (Nov. 12). When hardworking TV producer Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams) is fired from a local news program, her career begins to look as bleak as her love life. She snags a job at “Daybreak,” the last-place morning news show, and decides to revitalize it by bringing on legendary TV anchor Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford). Unfortunately, Pomeroy refuses to cover morning show staples like celebrity gossip, weather, and fashion.
