Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • October 27, 2010 Area On Nov. 2, registered voters will have the opportunity to endorse the candidates who are running for mayor or council seats. A summary of the candidates follows. Allendale Mayor Vince Barra and Council Members Ari Bernstein and Susan LaMonica will run uncontested this year. All of the candidates are Republicans. Barra, a retired maritime attorney, won the Republican Club’s endorsement for mayor four years ago. Barra has presided over several notable achievements, including the movement to fund development of Orchard Commons as a passive park rather than a 24-unit, eight-building townhouse tract. He also coordinated the development of special housing on one quadrant of the lot. Both measures were completed with no direct impact on Allendale taxpayers. The original initiative, spearheaded by Councilman Jim Strauch, was fueled by voluntary donations from residents and a grant from the Passaic River Valley Coalition. Barra, assisted by the council, then obtained grants from the Bergen County Open Space fund and New Jersey Green Acres to purchase the 3.4 acre tract from owner Ramon Alvarez. Barra also strongly supported a perpetual scholarship for Allendale high school students who graduate from Northern Highlands in honor of the victims of the World Trade Center attack, including Allendale resident Donald Delapenha. Barra’s own brother-in-law, Wyckoff resident Craig Silverstein, was also killed in the World Trade Center attack. Bernstein, a graduate of Ramapo Indian Hills High School, is an attorney with offices in Franklin Lakes. LaMonica, whose father once served as mayor of Oradell, is recently retired from the banking industry.
