(continued from page 3) Marge Roukema. He currently serves as president of the Highlands Community Association, and previously served as vice president and park commissioner. Prior to joining the council, he served for 10 years on the Waldwick Library Board. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and has coached soccer and softball. He and his wife, Karen, have two children and are parishioners of St. Luke’s Church. “We are running for reelection because we feel that Waldwick needs experienced people to continue to address the issues during these difficult times,” Giordano and Sciolaro said in a joint statement. “We will continue to focus on our future. There are many important issues that the council addresses each year, but the most critical and challenging issues we must address are upon us. A weak economy, a demand for services, and reduced state aid are the most difficult issues for any governing body to address. We have worked hard to reduce unnecessary spending and to lay the foundation for meeting these challenges head on. “We have a variety of partnerships with neighboring communities that enable us to offer more services at a lower cost. More importantly, these cooperative agreements are the foundation for even greater cost sharing opportunities when we need it most. We have partnerships on road repaving projects, leaf and branch removal, municipal court services, and more. These partnerships with our neighboring communities save us tens of thousands of dollars each year. We continue to identify new revenue streams by installing solar panels, which provide an additional $20,000 a year in revenue, and by recycling cardboard, which will save us over $35,000 in the next five years, so when the costs of programs increase, as they all do, we do not have to pass those increases on to you. All these programs enable us to continue to offer the services that make our quality of life what we expect for less. Anyone can say they’re going to cut spending and cut your taxes. “We all know these are difficult promises to keep without asking you to make even more sacrifices. We don’t think you have to do that. We will continue to seek opportunities for offering more programs and services for less. We will continue to be focused on reducing costs and identifying other revenue producing programs. Finally, we don’t look for short-term money saving gimmicks that may create even more difficult challenges down the road. While concerned about our current financial well-being, we know we are all here for the long-term. We can only do that if we are vigilant year after year and by making the right decisions for the right reasons. “That is what you can expect by reelecting us to the council. Please get out and vote for us on Nov. 2 and together we will make a difference for Waldwick’s future. Thank you for your support.”
