Habitat for Humanity
(continued from previous page) foreclosure sale in 2008 and donated to Habitat. The purchase was funded from a trust fund comprised of a percentage of all residential and non-residential development earmarked to support affordable housing initiatives, so the project had no financial impact on local taxpayers. Applicants were pre-screened by Habitat, with the final selection determined by a lottery drawing held in Waldwick town hall last spring. Habitat worked with the Bergen County Housing Authority on the selection process following Council on Affordable Housing (COAH) guidelines. Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County uses volunteer labor and donated funds and materials to build decent, affordable housing for hard-working families in Bergen County. The homes are sold to families at cost, with no interest added. Please visit Habitat’s website at www. habitatbergen.org under the Volunteer Tab to find out more information about volunteering to assist in building affordable homes in Bergen County. Volunteers on the jobsites must be at least 16 years old and varying skill levels are needed.
