A 14K solid gold pocket watch that belonged to a former mayor of Waldwick has been traced to a jewelry shop in Crystal, Minnesota that has been in business since 1896. According to the hand-engraved watch, the timepiece was presented to B.B. (Benjamin Brundred) Van Wagoner by his colleagues in recognition of his service as Waldwick’s mayor from 1922-26. According to the book “Images of America: Waldwick,” Van Wagoner and his family lived in the Van Wagoner House on the north side of Wyckoff Avenue near Monroe Street, having moved to that site in 1891. Borough Clerk Paula Jaegge said recently that she hoped a family member or benefactor would purchase the piece and preserve it for the town. “It would be bringing back a piece of history. I’d love to see it here in town, perhaps mounted where it would be secure,” said Jaegge. She said she was made aware of the existence of the watch by a police historian in California,
Former mayor’s pocket watch traced to Minnesota shop
Nathan Semel, who had come across it in his antiques circle and “wanted to get it home.” Tom Johantgen, who owns Johantgen Jewelers with his brother Todd, reported that Todd had recently purchased the pocket watch from an individual who brought it to the store and had no family connection to the watch. “The watch case is in mint condition,” Tom said. “The dial has some wear between the 10 and the 12. We could refinish it, but we’re keeping it as original as possible.” Tom described the piece as an Illinois railroad pocket watch with Bunn special movement and a solid gold train. He explained that the 21-jewel movement allows the watch to be so accurate that the timepiece could be used to time trains so they would not run into each other. “This style movement is very sought after by pocket watch collectors,” he added. Anyone wishing further information may contact Jaegge.
