October 20, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 5 Waldwick Borough to seek grant for West Saddle River Road West Saddle River Road in Waldwick may see major improvements next year if the borough is successful in acquiring grant funds for the work. The borough is seeking $150,000 from the NJ Department of Transportation Trust Fund for the project. The grant would fund rehabilitation of the .37-mile roadway from the Ho-Ho-Kus to the Saddle River borders. The entire project is expected to cost $181,222, with the borough paying the difference from its capital improvement fund. Work would include milling and paving as well ‘Grand’ day at Traphagen as drainage and curb replacement. Barrier free curb cuts will also be installed. Borough Administrator Gary Kratz had urged the borough council to submit an application this year before the trust fund’s moneys are depleted or before the guidelines are changed. He said that even though the road had been paved with NJDOT funds in the late ‘90s, it is now in total disrepair. “The road is a mess because of utility excavation,” Kratz said. He noted that the borough’s own sewer and water utilities as well as PSE&G, ATT and Verizon had dug up the road over the years. “You have excavations, and then the patches wear out and puddles develop,” he added. “It’s narrow and bumpy.” When the council discussed the grant application last month, it also considered Lindberg Parkway, but chose West Saddle River Road instead based on Kratz’ assessment that it’s in worse condition. “It’s more expensive to do; you can practically land an aircraft on it,” Kratz told the council. He said that if they chose Lindberg, they might consider ways to reduce its width, perhaps by putting in an island. Kratz said Lindberg also has “drainage, sump pump and curb issues” which would drive up the price. Councilman Frank Palladino commented that West Saddle River Road was the better choice for improvement. “It has more traffic, from Route 17 and Hollywood Avenue,” he said. Julia A. Traphagen School recently celebrated Grandparents Day. Children invited their grandparents to visit their classrooms, meet their teachers, and share what they are learning in school. The fifth grade students welcomed the grandparents to the school and escorted them to the proper classrooms. Call about our Special Occasion Catering No job too big or too small! 99 West Allendale Ave. Allendale, NJ Phone: 201-327-2423 Fax: 201-327-9550 Academic Excellence Program for K -12 MATH • READING • WRITING Test Prep: SAT I / II Bergen County Academies JEI Learning Center of Waldwick (Michael Academy) Mike Canova-Owner, Graduate of Culinary Institute of America Monday thru Saturday 6am to 3pm • Sunday 7am to 2pm 4 North St. Suite 500 • Waldwick, NJ 07463 201.493.9982 BerniesBagelsGeneric2x2(2-17-10) For Mike from Janine 2 x 2” We Have The Exact Leaf Blower For Your Needs!
