The Washington Elm Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 192 (Ho-Ho-Kus/Ridgewood) and its Ladies Auxiliary invite students in grades six through 12 and educators of students in grades K-12 to participate in one of three upcoming contests. Students must be from Ho-Ho-Kus, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, or Ridgewood; educators must be teaching in one of those districts. The deadline for nominations/submissions is Nov. 1. The VFW welcomes nominations from peers, supervisors, or other interested individuals (who are not family members) for the New Jersey State VFW Outstanding High School Citizenship Teacher. Deadline for VFW Post 192 contests approaching
teachers, who teach at least half the school day in a classroom environment, are eligible. Previous state and national VFW winners are ineligible. The VFW’s Citizenship Education program stimulates interest in American history, traditions, institutions, civic responsibility, flag etiquette, and patriotism. High school students are invited to participate in the VFW’s Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition. Entrants in this annual audio essay competition must write and then record a three-to-five minute audio essay. This year’s theme is: “Does my generation have a role in America’s future?” Middle school students may enter the Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition. Students in grades six, seven, and eight will have the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in U.S. Savings Bonds and a trip to be honored at the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary Community Service Conference. Students will be required to write a 300 to 400 word essay on the theme: “Does patriotism still matter?” In each contest, winners at the post level will advance to district-level competition. Warren Avenue Bridge remains closed The Warren Avenue Bridge in Ho-Ho-Kus will be closed to all motorists and pedestrians until the end of this year. Bergen County is currently refurbishing the structure. Donate your used sports equipment The Ho-Ho-Kus Recreation Commission, in cooperation with the Ho-Ho-Kus/Saddle River Athletic Association, will collect used sports equipment to benefit local area recreation programs in need. Bring your used baseball or softball bats and gloves, soccer balls, tennis racquets, lacrosse sticks, football gear, and any other sports equipment to the Ho-Ho-Kus Town Green on Saturday, Oct. 23 between the hours of 9 and 11 a.m. For more information, contact Recreation Director Ed Gartner at HHKRecreation@aol.com or (201) 934-3994. Box Tops for Education drive underway The Home and School Association is collecting Box Tops for Education Labels. The community is asked to save the labels on purchases and bring them to the collection box located in borough hall. Each label is worth 10 cents to the school. Gift Bazaar set The Ho-Ho-Kus Waldwick Cooperative Nursery School, a non-profit organization, invites the community to its fundraising bazaar on Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Start holiday shopping early and support the school’s enrichment programs. Vendors scheduled to attend include Tupperware, Lia Sofia, Pampered Chef, Little Black Dress Jewelry, and Mary Kay. There will also be multiple vendors selling handmade items such as wreaths, dolls, doll clothes, jewelry, and more. The nursery school is located in the lower level of the Community Church at the corner of Warren and Sycamore avenues in Ho-Ho-Kus. For more information, call (201) 445-8424. Club to hold Open House A modern windmill farm is the latest innovation to appear on the Ramapo Valley Railroad Club’s model train layout. The club welcomes the community to view its layout at the annual Holiday Open House set for Nov. 21 and 28, and Dec. 5, 12, and 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to the show is $4 for adults and $1 for children under the age of 12, with a maximum of $10 per family. Schneider to discuss ghosts at library On Oct. 21, photographer Stuart Schneider will visit the Worth Pinkham Memorial Library at 7 p.m. to discuss ghosts.
