As of last week, the Upper Saddle River police contract remains under review. Upper Saddle River Borough Administrator Ted Preusch told Villadom TIMES the language of the contract is still being refined. The item was not on last week’s council agenda, and the governing body did not discuss the proposed agreement during its Thursday session. Previously, the council tentatively approved a three-year agreement that would give members of the local Policemen’s Benevolent Association a three percent raise for 2010, followed by two percent

raises in 2011 and 2012. The prior police contract, which ended in December 2009, provided for salary increases of 3.95 percent in 2007, 2008, and 2009. In September, Upper Saddle River Mayor Kenneth Gabbert told Villadom TIMES the tentative agreement included a lower entry level salary for police officers. New hires, he said, would earn a starting salary of $32,000 rather than the $44,000 to $45,000 available under the prior contract. Mayor Gabbert also pointed out that the officers would be required to contribute 1.5 percent of their salaries toward health benefits. He credited the council’s negotiations team of Roger DeBerardine and Vincent Durante for putting in many hours on the contract. PBA President Kenneth Osbourne said he has not seen a final copy of the proposed
contract. He pointed out that, even after the council gives its formal approval to the terms of the agreement, the members of his organization would still have to give their consent in order to bring the contract negotiations to a close.
