October 13, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 29 Waldwick Watch Flu vaccine available The Waldwick Board of Health will hold its Flu Vaccination Program on Tuesday, Oct. 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Village School, 100 West Prospect Avenue. Individuals must be 18 years and older to receive the vaccine. Those who have Medicare Part B will need to present their Medicare card at the time of vaccination. Those who are 65 or older and do not have Medicare Part B should receive the influenza vaccine from their regular health care provider. Medicare HMOs will not be accepted. Levy to discuss Halloween films Classic film expert Bill Levy will present “Silver Screen Nostalgia: Movies for Halloween” at the Waldwick Public Library on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. The program will include a discussion of movies featuring ghosts, witches, and other spirits; trivia questions; and film clips from “I Married a Witch,” “The Canterville Ghost,” “Scared Stiff,” “Topper,” and “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.” Levy writes “Forgotten Gems,” a column on the films of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s for the national periodical “Movie Collector’s World” and is a contributor to “Fifty Plus,” a monthly publication for seniors. Levy has a repertoire of more than 30 programs on the films and stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era. Lions sponsor Blood Drive The Waldwick Lions will sponsor the Waldwick Community Blood Drive in cooperation with Community Blood Services on Thursday, Oct. 14 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. The drive will be held at Traphagen School on Ridge Road. The drive will help ensure that the transfusion needs of area patients are met. To schedule an appointment, call Community Blood Services at (201) 2513703. All types of blood are needed especially types O- and O+. Any healthy individual age 17 through 75 and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature. All donors receive a complimentary cholesterol screening with every blood donation. Holiday cake and pie fundraiser set The Friends of the Waldwick Library organization is offering gourmet cakes and pies for the holidays. The cakes and pies, provided by Carousel Cakes Bakery, are available at discount prices. These specialty desserts retail for $40 in gourmet shops, but can be ordered through the Waldwick Library at a cost of $15 per pie and $17 per cake. Black and white mousse, carrot, New York blackout, New York cheese, and mousse supreme are among the cake offerings; pie selections include coconut custard, Toll House, pumpkin, pumpkin cheese, pecan, and a variety of fruit pies. Order forms, a catalogue of desserts, and other details are available at the library circulation desk. The deadline for placing orders for Thanksgiving is Saturday, Nov.13 for pickup on Nov. 23; the deadline for placing orders for Christmas is Saturday, Dec. 11 for a Dec. 22 pickup. Local student honored Waldwick resident Ingrid Alba has been named to the Dean’s List at Dover Business College in Clifton for the 2010 summer quarter. To qualify for the Dean’s List, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.8 or better with a minimum of 12 academic credits. Students of the Month named As part of its student recognition program, Waldwick High School and Waldwick Middle School have announced the Students of the Month for September. The selections are made by faculty members. High school students honored are Shauna Vanderee for athletics, Sabina Sullivan for foreign language, and Nicholas DiPrimo for technology. Middle school students recognized are sixth grader Tyler Semus, seventh grader Kaitlyn Harrigan, and eighth grader Colleen Moran. Halloween family night offered “Boooo-tacular” Family Fun will be held at In the Swing, 145 Hopper Avenue in Waldwick, on Oct. 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event will include the indoor playground, a Halloween craft, and 50 tokens per family for use in the arcade. Club to discuss ‘Kaaterskill Falls’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “Kaaterskill Falls” by Allegra Goodman on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7:15 p.m. The sacred and the secular intertwine and clash in Goodman’s observant novel, which was a National Book Award finalist. The title refers to a small upstate New York town, which is the summer home of a congregation of strict Orthodox Jews. Copies of the book are available at the library’s circulation desk. The book club welcomes new members and drop-ins from Waldwick and neighboring towns. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street. The Waldwick Mayor and Council and the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce recently unveiled a perpetual plaque to hang in the council chambers at borough hall displaying the names of the top winners of the annual 5K Run each year who are also Waldwick residents. WEF hosts annual fundraiser The Waldwick Education Foundation’s annual Fundraiser Auction Dinner on Friday, Oct. 15 at Waldwick High School. Dinner will be catered by Olde Towne Deli, and guests will have the opportunity to win over 100 baskets and other prizes, while supporting Waldwick’s public schools.
