Page 26 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & III • October 13, 2010 ‘The Social Network’ (continued from Entertainment page) for bankrolling early attempts to get what would ultimately be called Facebook off the ground. Eduardo is made chief financial officer, and developments push him further and further from the creative loop. Garfield’s Eduardo is a marked contrast with Mark. He is soft-spoken, deliberate, and reflective, while Mark machine-guns his thoughts and vision, overwhelming those around him. Garfield turns in an excellent, sympathetic performance. Timberlake is a wise choice for Parker. He brings his own star aura to the role, which requires Parker to be a smooth pitchman who knows how to ride on his reputation and expand a good idea into a billion-dollar one. Fincher elicits uniformly fine performances from a cast of young actors, and manages to include lots of information in a concise two hours. Sorkin’s scenes are so compactly written and Fincher’s direction so precise that the film’s pace is brisk and never bogs down with showiness. The picture has a winning balance of drama, pathos, humor, and even melodrama. There are no car chases. Imagine that. Behind-the-scenes stories of corporate America can be intriguing. Think “Wall Street” and “The Smartest Men in the Room,” the documentary chronicling the smoke-andmirrors Enron fiasco. “The Social Network” is so captivating because the idea that made Zuckerberg the youngest self-made billionaire in history has elements of classic tragedy. His brilliance is amazing, his calculating nature surprising, and his journey from obscurity to notoriety, fame, and riches is compelling. Rated PG-13, “The Social Network” is first-rate movie making. If you don’t see that many films each year, this is one not to miss. and theatrical trailers. “The Adventures of Robin Hood” (Pop Flix) was a halfhour television series that ran from 1955 to 1958. Filmed on location in England, the show starred Richard Greene as the legendary hero who, each week, battled wits with the nefarious Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin’s true love, Maid Marian, was a member of Prince John’s court and often provided Robin with useful information, keeping the sheriff from capturing him. The set contains 39 episodes. “The Gates” (Kino on Video) tells about the evolution of one of the largest public artworks in history. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s massive undertaking involved a “golden river” of 7,503 fabric-paneled gates in Central Park. While the artists’ vision sought to unite all of New York City, the public reacted with accusations of “defacement of a masterpiece” and was likened to painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa. Twenty-four years later, and after the election of Michael Bloomberg as mayor, the project was approved in January 2003 and completed in February 2005. The documentary takes viewers through all stages of planning, from high points to low, culminating in the two-week installation. The best part of the film is the images of the flowing orange fabric as the sun illuminates them, giving the dull winter park landscape a splash of color.
