ccording to the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgeons website, (www. abpns.org) there are only two board-certified pediatric neurosurgeons in New Jersey. As a fellowship-trained, pediatric neurosurgeon, Dr. Cathy Mazzola treats children with traumatic brain injury, concussions, hydrocephalus, brain tumors, spine tumors, tethered spinal cord, craniofacial diagnoses, and plagiocephaly. She also cares for adult neurosurgical patients with congenital disorders, like cerebral palsy and spina bifida. Dr. Mazzola has written many articles about brain tumors, spina bifida, and brain injury that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Mazzola has over 15 years of experience in neurological surgery. She was trained by Drs. Peter Carmel, Arno Fried, Fred Epstein, Leland Albright, Ian Pollack, and David Adelson -- all well-known pediatric neurosurgeons. Less than five percent of all neurosurgeons are women, and there are only a few pediatric neurosurgeons in New Jersey. As the mother of five children, Dr. Mazzola understands the responsibilities of parenthood. When she sees children with developmental disabilities, she is able to empathize with parents who have children with special needs. national organization of neurosurgeons, in 2001. She is one of the few women who have been elected to the Executive Committee of CNS. Dr. Mazzola’s manuscript discussing the risks of work hour reduction in neurosurgical residency was selected as the lead article in the August 2010 NEUROSURGERY journal. As a prominent leader among women in neurosurgery, Dr. Mazzola recognizes her responsibility to mentor to students interested in neurosurgery. Dr. Mazzola has mentored over 40 pre-med and medical students throughout her career. Dr. Mazzola was responsible for the creation of the Neuromuscular and Movements Disorder Center for Children at Hackensack University Medical Center in 2001 and the Craniofacial and Cleft Lip and Palate Center at Morristown Memorial Hospital in 2006. She has cared for thousands of children with neurosurgical disorders in New Jersey. In July 2009, she started her own practice: New Jersey Pediatric Neurosurgical Associates. Dr. Mazzola accepted the challenge of developing a unique, specialty practice that accommodates children and adults with all aspects of congenital and pediatric neurosurgical disorders.
