Waldwick

A resident of East Prospect Street in Waldwick asked the mayor and council last week to help slow down traffic on her street bound to and from Route 17. Maggie Frederic, who said she lives three houses in from Route 17, said that in the past two years alone there have been five accidents in front of her house. She blamed the problem in part on the speed of cars and the inattention of drivers as they exit the highway and the presence of a dangerous curve. “Yesterday a vehicle went off the road onto the sidewalk and then went off again. If someone had been on the sidewalk, he would be dead,” Frederic said. She said on another occasion a vehicle hit the neighbor’s retaining wall and went onto the lawn, adding that the neighbor has children and pets who could have been on the lawn playing. “We’re petrified at this point,” she said. She suggested that rumble strip similar to ones in place in Ho-Ho-Kus be installed. “If they are drunk, falling asleep or foggy, they will slow down,” she said.
Resident wants help with East Prospect traffic
Borough Administrator Gary Kratz said that the strips in Ho-Ho-Kus are part of the state highway system, not the local road. He also said that residents of the area do not want the state to install guard rails. Frederic said she would be willing to contact the state
if that is where she should start her effort to resolve the problem. “I thought I would start here and get direction,” Frederic said. Kratz was asked to research the matter and will discuss alternatives with the resident.
Bainbridge program to feature Antarctica
Chuck Bainbridge will present “Antarctica: Journey to the Bottom of the World,” on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Waldwick Library. On a 27-day journey run by Lindblad Excursions in conjunction with the National Geographic Society, Bainbridge traveled through the Antarctic Peninsula, South Orkney Islands, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, and Tierra del Fuego. Bainbridge will reveal how this icy and barren land is home to some of the most spectacular wildlife and beautiful scenery on the planet. Bainbridge has been a resident of Waldwick for 32 years. Now retired, he is an avid traveler, gardener, and birder who credits his mother with his love and appreciation of nature. The program is free and open to the public; however space is limited and advance registration is recommended. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick.
