Sophia ties a pink ribbon in honor of Breask Cancer Awareness Month.
It is time again to dress up Franklin Lakes with hot pink ribbons signifying breast cancer awareness. This year’s Tie a Ribbon event will be held Saturday, Oct. 9 at 9 a.m. at Franklin Lakes Borough Hall. Pink ribbons are now available for a $5 donation. Checks should be made payable to: Komen North Jersey -- Tie a Ribbon. Call (201) 674-4010 to arrange delivery. Last year, the Franklin Lakes schools looked fantastic thanks to the Girl Scouts, Medco’s campus was wonderfully decorated by employees, and Franklin Lakes became the showpiece of Komen North Jersey. Save the date: On Sunday, May 15, 2011, the Race for the Cure will be held in a new location -- Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex in West Orange (near the Turtleback Zoo). Event organizers need help, and volunteers are needed to staff the educational table from noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 9, 16, 23, and 30. Contact Colleen Miller, volunteer development manager, at cmiller@komennorthjersey.org or (908) 277-2904.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women. In 2006, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 40,820 women died from breast cancer. That same year, 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Among Hispanic women, breast cancer is the No. 1 cause of cancer death, while it is the second most common cause of cancer death among white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. Overall, the incidence of breast cancer in women in the United States is one in eight, or 12.5 percent. Still, roughly 2.5 million women in the U.S. have survived breast cancer. While it is highly uncommon, breast cancer is not exclusive to women. Though less than one percent of all new breast cancer cases occur in men, estimates suggest roughly 2,000 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
