Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • October 6, 2010 Allendale Notebook Autumn Book Sale set The Friends of the Allendale Library’s Autumn Book Sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lee Memorial Library, 500 West Crescent Avenue. The sale will include a wide variety of “almost new” fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children, including current best-sellers and volumes on history, science fiction, education, and travel – all at bargain prices that start at 25 cents. Videos and books on tape are also offered. At these low prices, teachers will find this an excellent opportunity to gather books to use in their classrooms. Proceeds from the sale go directly to the library to purchase new materials. Chamber plans meeting The Allendale Chamber of Commerce will host a luncheon meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at noon at the Allendale Community for Mature Living/The Atrium, 85 Harreton Road in Allendale. Tea room accoutrements sought A tea room is being formed to help raise money to help pay for renovations and maintenance at the John Fell House. The Tea Committee is asking the public for donations of tea cups, saucers, dishes, trays, flatware, tea trolleys, folding tables, chairs, and any other items appropriate for tea service. The menu will consist of a selection of tea sandwiches along with traditional scones, biscuits, cookies, and a variety of teas. Plans call for music and other forms of entertainment. Community Night to benefit AFEE The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence will host its Fourth Annual Community Night Out Oct. 18 and 19 at the Allendale Bar and Grill, 67 West Allendale Avenue. Participants should mention AFEE when ordering lunch or dinner and the foundation will receive a generous percentage of the day’s profits. This year, the menu will include the AFEE Burger of the Week. Take out orders will be included. All funds generated during this two-day event will directly benefit Allendale Schools through AFEE’s enrichment programs. Share this event with grandparents, neighbors, and friends from out of town. AFEE accepts grant proposals The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc. will accept grant proposals now through Oct. 28. Parents, teachers, local business people, students, staff, and all other members of the community are encouraged to participate in making proposals for projects or programs that are in keeping with the foundation’s mission to enhance and broaden the educational experience of all students attending Allendale’s Hillside and Brookside schools. Ecumenical Bible Study slated Trinity Church in Allendale’s ecumenical Bible Study, “The Call to Discipleship,” is now underway. This weekly study will meet from 12:45 to 2:30 p.m. through the third week of January 2011. “The Call to Discipleship” will be led by lecturer Erilynne Barnum, who teaches the scripture on video with practical living application and provides clear understanding and insight in her presentation. All are welcome. Each lesson stands on its own, yet builds on the previous lesson. No previous Bible study is necessary to attend. Attendees are welcome to come as often as possible. Homemade pie sale underway Archer United Methodist Church is selling fresh and frozen 10-inch apple pies on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and Sunday after the 10:30 a.m. worship service until the end of October. XYZ Club meets The XYZ Senior Citizens Club of Allendale meets on the first and third Friday of the month at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 165 West Crescent Avenue at 11 a.m. Allendale residents who would like to participate in club activities are welcome. Free health consultations offered The Bergen County Department of Health Services offers a free health consultation program in the Allendale for adult residents. Staffed by a public health nurse, guidance and referral services are provided for health maintenance. Monitoring of health history, and height, weight, and blood pressure checks are offered at each visit. Residents are assured of complete confidentiality of health information. Library offers notification service The Lee Memorial Library is now keeping track of new books published by a list of authors and will notify interested patrons when new books are published and put books on hold for patrons who have subscribed to the new service. Choose from a list of 12 popular fiction and mystery authors. Stop by the library and select favorite authors any time the library is open.
