Harvest Festival is October 17 The Harvest Festival and Petting Zoo at the Hopper-Goetschius House Museum in Upper Saddle River will be held Oct. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m., not Oct. 4, as previously announced. This event will feature a variety of activities for children and adults. There will be a Petting Zoo with goats, lambs, donkeys, ducks, chickens, and rabbits; pony rides; and demonstrations of colonial crafts such as spinning, chair caning, wood carving, quilting, bobbin lace making, and rug braiding. Watch the cider pressing in the old Dutch barn and enjoy a taste of fresh cider. Taste one of yesteryear’s recipes cooked over the open hearth fire in the out kitchen. Come for lunch. There will be grilled hot dogs and soda to purchase. Visit the fortune teller and find out what your future holds. There will be old-fashioned games and activities for children. Everyone is invited to guess the weight of the Giant Pumpkin. This year, there will be a special area featuring several antiques and crafts dealers and artists. The museum and barn will be open for special tours. The Hopper Goetschius House Museum is located at the corner of East Saddle River Road and Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Travel Basketball Tryouts set The 2010 Upper Saddle River Travel Basketball Tryouts will take place Oct. 11 through 18 for boys and girls in grades four through eight. The registration fee is $300. This fee includes registration for travel, recreation and participation in one tournament. This fee does not include any uniform expense the team may incur. Registrants are asked to not register for recreation basketball until the travel teams have been selected. Last week, Dr. Raupers told Villadom TIMES the estimated cost of the new construction was $5,989,000, and the state would have provided $1,104,730. However, the Governor Christie’s cut of $1.2 million in state aid to the district made it necessary for district officials to use the money it had previously saved for the construction project to cover other immediate costs. “It’s back on the back burner,” Dr. Raupers said of the project. “We are collecting information at this stage, and we hope to have all-day kindergarten. The options are being studied.”

The sewer line project will include replacing or repairing existing pipes in an effort to reduce I&I and the resulting sewer charges. Work will start in the west side of town, where video camera inspections have identified the greatest problems exist. The borough’s sewer bill from the Northwest Bergen Utilities Authority
(NWBUA) was up $220,000 last year. “Half of our $1.8 million bill to the sewer authority is based on flow. If we can reduce the flow, obviously we’ll reduce our costs,” Kratz said. Sewer charges make up 15 percent of the town’s total budget, according to Kratz. The administrator said the projects are expected to go out to bid next month, with work beginning as soon as the weather permits in 2011.
