Upper Saddle River November 24, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 9 LLC facilitates church’s goal to add solar panels This winter, the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River expects to “go green” with the installation of solar panels. Father Bob Stagg, the church pastor, recently reported that the contract with Mercury Solar Systems has been inked. In order to take advantage of the federal rebate that is available to those who purchase systems before the end of 2010, Stagg noted that a group of investors stepped forward and formed a limited liability corporation, or LLC, which can avail itself of the rebate. Churches, which are tax-exempt, cannot. Stagg said the LLC stands to receive a grant equal to 30 percent of the $275,000 cost of the solar equipment. The LLC will lease the equipment to the parish, and the parish will assume ownership in five years. Stagg said the lease will be paid through the sale of solar renewable energy credits, informally known as SRECs, which utility companies are required to purchase. He pointed out that New Jersey has the most lucrative market for SRECs, making it easier for the parish to take this step toward good stewardship. Stagg previously stated that, while everyone should be encouraged to foster “green” pursuits, churches have more of a moral responsibility to be good stewards of the earth. The church building, which is located on West Saddle River Road, is exposed to the sun for many hours each day. The solar panels will be able to capture the southern and eastern sunlight. Presentation was inspired, in part, by the success of the 2009 solar panel installation at the Cavallini Middle School. Cavallini began using its new solar energy collection system in November 2009. The school’s heating and lighting systems are still in place, but the solar energy collection offsets overall energy costs. School officials estimate that the solar cells will save the district approximately $11,000 per year in avoided energy costs. In addition, the district expects to be able to sell SRECs, which could amount to an additional $47,000. A school 2009 publication reported that the solar cells will pay for themselves after five years, and for the entire roof within 21 years.
