This family needs help: Sophia is a twoyear old who lives in Bergen County with her parents and older brother. Sophia was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at the age of six months. She received medical treatment and was making a full recovery, although her vision was impacted due to the cancer being concentrated in her eyes. Sophia was in remission, but on Sept. 1, she became very sick and had a seizure. Her parents were told the cancer had spread to Sophia’s brain and spine. She has now been given a diagnosis of bilateral blastoma. She is currently undergoing an aggressive form of chemotherapy under a clinical research trial and she has spent most of the past few months in the hospital due to many complications from the cancer. She has suffered partial paralysis due to the tumor on her spine, and has had a blood clot in her neck. Sophia’s mom spends every night with Our hat’s off to: Atlantic Stewardship Bank for supporting our upcoming fundraiser, A Hollywood Bash, Legends Steakhouse for selecting ECF as a recipient of their annual golf outing, and Glen Rock Hamilton School for bringing us candy from their drive. Thank you to the many generous people who walk through our doors. Whether you are dropping off a birthday bag for a family, making a food donation, volunteering to drive, or starting your own fundraiser, we cannot say thank you enough! The local community is simply amazing and we truly appreciate your help. We know our 4-29-09 karen/janine to everyonefamilies do, too. Sophia gets very upset if she is left alone in the hospital without one of her parents or a close family member. Sophia’s mom has had to leave her job. While Sophia’s father continues to work, the family has lost over half of their income. Everyday living costs have become nearly impossible to cover, and the family will likely have to move to a cheaper apartment in the near future. Currently, this family is in need of several things they are not able to purchase. These toys for Sophia were recommended by her physical therapist, who hopes they will encourage Sophia to stand and regain strength in her legs: Step2 Easel or Step2 Easel for Two, and the Step2 LifeStyle Custom Kitchen. Sophia would also benefit from a portable DVD player since she isn’t able to see the TV at the hospital because of her visual impairment. She would love to watch cartoons during those long hospital stays. Sophia is too big for her crib, and the family cannot afford to buy a new bed for her. They would love to be able to give her a new toddler bed or, as a special treat, a Princess Toddler Cot. Finally, the family vehicle needs new tires, which is critical for taking Sophia back and forth to New York City for multiple hospital visits and treatments. They need four all-purpose tires for a 2000 Ford Explorer in size P255/70R16. Help a family for the holidays: We are looking for Santa drivers to deliver holiday gifts to our families in Bergen, Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties. Please volunteer to spend a few hours dropping off some gifts. You will need proof of a current background check, or we can help you get one. How about preparing a holiday basket for one of our families? You pick the trimmings! You can help in a variety of ways. Turn your next event into a fundraiser by collecting checks or gift cards to be donated to ECF, or donate your restaurant or business for a few hours to host a fundraiser of your choice. Your efforts will help us to send a caseworker to visit the families at their home or in the hospital. This support for the kids, their siblings, and parents is crucial. We are also available to come speak at your fundraiser or event and talk about our programs. Get your kids involved. Some have held bake sales, yard sales, or had hot chocolate stands. Is your Cub Scout or Girl Scout Troop looking to earn badges? Scouts can have fun helping ECF while learning about philanthropy. Your food donations or grocery gift cards also help support ECF’s food pantry, which helps feed many families in this area. We rely on our local community to help support our families. Many of them do not have the financial or emotional support to help them get through a major illness like cancer. Please remember that we do not charge anything for our services. We rely on you. If you have a few hours a week to spare, consider becoming a volunteer or just stop by and meet with us, and see what ECF is all about. Volunteers are welcome to assist on Monday from 10 to 1, Wednesday from 1 to 4, and all day on Friday. Call us at (201) 612-8118 before you stop by. Please do not leave items at the center without checking with us first. Our storage space is limited. The Northern Regional Center is located at 174 Paterson Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432.
