Upper Saddle River November 24, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Haitian youth receives life-saving heart surgery Four-year-old Jean Danson of Haiti recently received life-saving heart surgery thanks to the Haiti Medical Mission Team from Upper Saddle River’s Church of the Presentation. Each spring and fall, the team travels to Cavaillon, Haiti to run its medical outreach. This spring, the group met Danson, and soon learned he had a hole in his heart and closed valves. Without surgery, he would not live to see another birthday. In partnership with Gift of Life International, a program run through Rotary organizations, and Nova Hope for Haiti, Danson was flown to the United States. Earlier this month, he received life-saving heart surgery at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson. Saint Joseph’s donated the hospital suite and their surgeons. Danson is now recovering from surgery at a host family’s home. Father Bob Stagg, Church of the Presentation’s pastor, said the parish became involved in Haiti through association with Father John “Jack” Martin, who had ties in that country. Each year, Stagg gathers doctors and nurses from the parish who volunteer their time to visit Haiti. Presentation’s partner, Nova Hope for Haiti, a 501c3 organization, has purchased 12 acres in Haiti – and there are big plans for the property. “Our hope is to build a medical clinic and housing for volunteers,” Stagg explained. The country, he said, is in serious need. “Before the quake there were tremendous needs. Now they are beyond anything I’ve ever seen before,” Stagg added. The effects of the early 2010 earthquake were recently compounded. This autumn’s medical mission was sidelined after a hurricane washed out the only road that leads from Port-au-Prince to Cavaillon. Stagg noted the overall lack of strong organization in Haiti, but added that non-government organizations acting on their own have been able to complete some worthwhile projects. Stagg described the youth, who received his first toy on the plane ride to New Jersey, as “a chick magnet.” He added that a Haitian boy with a club foot will soon be coming to this area so he can be treated by parishioner Jim Teucci, a pediatric orthopedist. The church group has identified other youths whose needs exceed what the local clinic in Haiti can provide.
