While most people are making plans for Thanksgiving, the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce is already looking ahead to May 1, 2001, the date of the Fourth Annual 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk. Sponsorship opportunities are available, and the Chamber encourages more sponsors, and more participants, to Chamber begins preparations for May’s 5K Run join in the upcoming run/walk, including representatives from local school and recreation league teams. The 2011 event will begin at the Waldwick High School turf field. Schwind Midshipman Jeffrey M. Schwind of Waldwick has graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, with 198 members of the Class of 2010. The son of Mark and Nancy Schwind, the recent graduate received a deck merchant marine license and a bachelor’s degree. Midshipman Schwind was nominated to the academy by Congressman Scott Garrett. U.S. Navy Admiral Michael G. Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, delivered the keynote address at the academy’s 74th commencement. Dr. Shashi N. Kumar, the academy’s interim superintendent, presented the Class of 2010 with their academic credentials. The academy is operated by the Maritime Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Ensign Schwind is currently serving his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. 9 a.m. The 5K course, which has been sanctioned by the USATF as a Grand Prix Event, includes rolling hills, a scenic park, and a finish at the track. No pets, roller blades, bikes, or skateboards will be permitted during the 5K; however, strollers will be permitted during the 1 Mile Fun Walk. The fun walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Event planners plan to have a DJ on hand to provide motivation for the runners, and opportunities for those in attendance to win prizes. The run and walk will be held rain or shine. No refunds will be given. Proceeds will benefit local charities and organizations. Despite the inclement weather for the 2010 event, the 5K drew approximately 300 runners to the certified course. Stan Kowalski, who has directed the run since its inception three years ago, was responsible for attaining the certification for the course.
