Council vote clinches preservation of 20 acres
The Allendale Borough Council voted to amend an ordinance so the borough can permanently preserve 20 acres of wetlands along Powell Road. The property will be protected from residential or commercial development with money from the Passaic River Coalition. “I am pleased that the borough was able to sell these wetlands to the Passaic River Coalition, which will ensure that they remain open space for generations to come,” Mayor Vince Barra said after the meeting. The Passaic River Coalition, an environmental group that protects natural sites along the Passaic River watershed, will convey $321,500 to the Borough of Allendale, which acquired the wetlands from the original owners over a number of years in lieu of unpaid taxes. Allendale retained title to a sliver of the land, but the bulk of the land now officially belongs to the Passaic River Coalition. The land cannot be developed because of its wetlands designation, and the transfer was accomplished without any direct impact on the taxpayers of Allendale. The Passaic River Coalition had previously helped Allendale with some seed money for legal expenses when Councilman Jim Strauch rallied residents against the construction of 24 condominium units at the site known as Orchard Commons. The seed money and donations from a number of residents convinced the borough council that a groundswell of resident opposition could be mobilized against Orchard Commons as a townhouse tract. The site is now a passive park, with one quadrant set aside for affordable housing. The Allendale Borough Council meeting was held on Monday to avoid a conflict with Veterans Day observances. J.
