Lions Club hosts Harvest Day Sale The Saddle River Valley Lions Club will hold its annual Harvest Day Sale on Saturday, Nov. 20. Members will be selling apples, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, grapefruits, jumbo cashews, chocolate covered raisins and pretzels, and an assortment of other items for Thanksgiving. Members will be at the following locations: Lions Park in Upper Saddle River; Ramapo Centre and Bank of America Route 17 South in Mahwah; Bank of America on Main Street; the post office in Ramsey; and Don’s Sunoco and Tice’s Corner in Woodcliff Lake. Since 1958, the Saddle River Valley Lions Club has donated over $1.7 million to charities and civic organizations. Nancy Stern to appear at library Join Nancy Stern, author of “The Uncomplicated Gourmet™,” as she prepares hors d’oeuvres at the Upper Saddle River Library on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Her cookbook will be available for purchase and signing. Special needs basketball offered For the first time, the Upper Saddle River Basketball Association is offering a structured, small group basketball clinic for special needs children in grades two and three. Clinics will be held on Sundays at 9 a.m. for an hour in the Reynolds School gym. The players will warm up, run drills, and scrimmage each other. Built-in breaks and other accommodations will be made. Each participant will require a parent shadow for all clinics. All players will receive a T-shirt. District offers preschool openings The Upper Saddle River school district has announced six general educational openings in the Integrated Preschool Program for September 2011. The Integrated Preschool Program is a nursery school program that incorporates the education of special education children with general education preschoolers. The program is held at Reynolds
School. All children in the program attend five half-days a week from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The first 15 applicants will be screened in early December; other applicants will be placed on a waiting list. The six openings will be offered by Dec. 22. The current tuition is $3,750; the tuition for 2011-12 will be determined in June 2011. To be eligible, a general education student must be four years of age on or before Oct. 1, 2011. A birth certificate, copy of immunizations, and four proofs of residency will be required. Navigate the admissions process The Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street, is offering a seminar on funding college expenses, including strategies to reduce expenses on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. This program is suitable for parents at all income levels, including those who will not qualify for need-based financial aid. Club welcomes new members, hosts events The Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club welcomes all residents from Saddle River and Upper Saddle River, regardless of the length of their residency. SRVJCO hosts events The Saddle River Valley Jewish Community will host its Annual Hanukkah Party on Friday, Dec. 3 at the Upper Saddle River Library from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. The party will feature a magician and treats for children under age eight. Scouts seek donations of outerwear Girl Scouts Victoria M. and Allison N. of Troops 1271 and 1375 are currently seeking new and clean, gently-used outerwear to be donated to the Boys and Girls Club in Paterson. The Cavallini Middle School students are working toward earning their Silver Awards. Outerwear being collected includes coats, ski jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, boots, and rain boots. Library announces fall programs The Upper Saddle River Library has planned various fall programs that are free and open to library cardholders in Bergen County, unless otherwise noted. Bridge Club meets on Mondays at 7 p.m. or Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Players are grouped by experience level. Preregistration is required. A variety of fitness classes are available including: Chi Kung on Mondays at 11 a.m.; Strengthen, Tone, and Stretch on Mondays at 9; Pilates on Mondays at 7:30 p.m.; Yoga, all levels, on Tuesdays at 9:45 a.m.; and Gentle Stretch Yoga for seniors on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. The library is located at 245 Lake Street. Basketball coaches sought The Upper Saddle River Basketball Association is seeking adults to coach the second, third, and fourth grade instructional programs and the fifth/sixth, seventh/eighth, and high school recreation programs for girls and boys.
