Pioneer, Inc. of Wayne has received the contract for exterior repairs to Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall. According to the agreement approved by the council, three bids were received for this project. The quotes included: J.D. Pioneer, Inc., $14,728; Cross Cut Construction Co., $18,500; and M. Ingannamorte & Son, $21,325. David Hals, the borough engineer, reviewed the bids and recommended the contract award to J.D. Pioneer, “price and all other factors considered,” the resolution states. Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli said plans call for the repair of the front steps, which have cracked, and the replacement of the column bases that have rotted. The columns will then be sanded and painted. The area above the front entrance will be replaced, and a missing piece of the façade will be repaired. All new shutters will be added to the building, as many are broken or missing, Cirulli added, and the window trim will be scraped and painted. Designed by architect Ross Mamola and built by Alba Construction Company, Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall opened at 333 Warren Avenue in January 1993. A dedication ceremony and Open House were held in May of that year. The building became the link between the borough’s sole firehouse and the ambulance corps building. Officials believe borough hall has not had significant work done to its exterior since 1993. Before the new location opened, borough hall was located on East Franklin Turnpike on the current site of At press time, the newly-installed lightning detection system was ready to “go live” in the Borough of Ho-HoKus. The system was tested late last week and related signs were installed at the two fields where the warning equipment is located. Last month, the Ho-Ho-Kus Council approved the introduction of Ordinance #971, which establishes Chapter 33A, entitled “Lightning Warning System” for the borough. The ordinance states that the borough has installed a lightning warning system at North Field and at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School field to warn individuals about the potential danger of lightning. The ordinance calls for warning signs to be posted at appropriate locations near those fields. Lightning detection system to ‘go live’ Veterans Memorial Park. Two advisory committees, one that researched the issue in 1991 and another one that was in operation in 1992-93, examined possible ways to use or preserve the old borough hall. The group that operated in 1991 attempted to secure designation for the building from the State Historical Registry without success. That committee had presented information based on the exterior of the building. In June 1993, after eight months of deliberation, the newer Borough Hall Advisory Committee recommended the old borough hall be razed to make way for a park and garden. Committee Chairman Raymond Barto, who is now chairman of the borough’s zoning board of adjustment, served with then-council members Allen Wahlberg and Rusty Thompson (who later served as mayor), Robert Stone, and Marilyn Becker. At the June 1993 public meeting, Barto told the public (continued on page 11) The detection system includes an audible alarm that will be used between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. and will be turned on and off with a timer. The strobe warning system will be in operation every hour of every day. The system is designed to provide warnings as electrical storms approach, including alarms when storms are 15, 10, and five miles away. The strobe will flash continuously for 30 minutes unless it is reactivated in the midst of a cycle.
