Special needs basketball offered For the first time, the Upper Saddle River Basketball Association is offering a structured, small group basketball clinic for special needs children in grades two and three. Clinics will be held on Sundays at 9 a.m. for an hour in the Reynolds School gym. The players will warm up, run drills, and scrimmage each other. Built-in breaks and other accommodations will be made. Each participant will require a parent shadow for all clinics. All players will receive a T-shirt. District offers preschool openings The Upper Saddle River school district has announced six general educational openings in the Integrated Preschool Program for September 2011. The Integrated Preschool Program is a nursery school program that incorporates the education of special education children with general education preschoolers. The program is held at Reynolds School. All children in the program attend five half-days a week from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The first 15 applicants will be screened in early December; other applicants will be placed on a waiting list. The six openings will be offered by Dec. 22. The current tuition is $3,750; the tuition for 2011-12 will be determined in June 2011. To be eligible, a general education student must be four years of age on or before Oct. 1, 2011. A birth certificate, copy of immunizations, and four proofs of residency will be required. SRVJCO hosts events, Food Drive The Saddle River Valley Jewish Community Organization is hosting a Thanksgiving Food Drive for The Center for Food Action in Mahwah. Donations may be dropped off before Nov. 16 at either 21 Old Stone Church Road or 25 Golfview, both in Upper Saddle River. The SRVJCO will host its Annual Hanukkah Party on Friday, Dec. 3 at the Upper Saddle River Library from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m. The party will feature a magician and treats for children under age eight. After the party, all are invited to the menorah lighting outside Upper Saddle River Borough Hall at 5 p.m. in celebration of Hanukkah. Zion Lutheran explores its roots Zion Lutheran Church, located at 96 East Allendale Road in Saddle River, will continue its exploration of the congregation’s roots on Monday, Nov. 15. Church members will take the parts of early pastors and members of the congregation to relate the church’s history from 1821 to the late 20th century. Artist Kate Faust to exhibit Award-winning photographer and painter Kate Faust will exhibit her oil paintings in the gallery at the Upper Saddle River Library during the month of November. Board of education to meet The Upper Saddle River Board of Education will meet Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. in the media center of the Cavallini Middle School, 392 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Garden Club announces award recipients The Saddle River Garden Club has announced the first recipients of its Random Acts of Beauty Award. These awards are presented to local residents who have made their homes and properties beautiful. Recipients include: Mr. Abrams of Eugene Road, Saddle River; Marilyn Goldfischer and Mike Contreni of West Saddle River Road, Saddle River; Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Luhl of Ware Road, Upper Saddle River; Jerry and Denise Silberman of East Saddle River Road, Saddle River; and Dr. and Mrs. Baume of Lower Cross Road, Saddle River. Award winners are nominated by club members. Woman’s Club celebrates 50 years On Nov. 10, the Woman’s Club of Upper Saddle River will mark its 50th year as a Federated Woman’s Club -- a milestone for a club in the New Jersey State Federation. To celebrate this important event, members of the club; Patti Whitehouse, the New Jersey State Federation President; and Michele Caron, vice president of the Ramapo District, will join members of the club for dinner on Nov. 10 at the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn. Families decorated the trunks of their vehicles, kids trick or treated in the parking lot, donations for the Community Supper were collected, and prizes were awarded for best costume, best themed trunk, and scariest trunk.

Navigate the admissions process The Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street, is offering two programs to help parents understand the college admissions process. Surviving the Marathon of the College Process will be presented by certified counselor Deborah Shames on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. Shames will offer information on how teens can select the right college. On Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m., attend a seminar on funding college expenses, including strategies to reduce expenses. Independent film series to begin On Nov. 12, the Upper Saddle River Library will launch a new independent film series. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. with “Alamar” directed by Pedro GonzalezRubio. Each month, the library will feature a newly-released independent film. A discussion and refreshments will follow.
