Waldwick November 3, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 The Waldwick Fire Department has a new thermal camera, which Fire Chief Walt Riker demonstrated at last week’s mayor and council meeting. The unit is used to locate victims in a fire. “Prior to the cameras, we had to go on our hands and knees with a flashlight,” the chief said. “It takes out the guessing on victims trapped inside so we can concentrate on the structure and putting out the fire,” he added. The camera was purchased with a $5,000 grant from the Bergen County 200 Club, an organization which assists police and fire departments with donations and scholarships. The amount was matched by the borough. Chief Riker said that the new Fire department gets third thermal camera camera will be installed on the ladder truck which goes out on mutual aid calls. “It’s useful to other towns as well,” he said. The department has two other units, one of which is installed on the rescue truck. He said no local maintenance is required. Only batteries have to be replaced, he said, and a backup is always charging. Any calibration or repairs are done at the factory but are seldom needed because all components are military grade. Councilwoman Anita Bozzo asked whether the camera is ever used to aid in police matters. Riker said that firemen assist in scoping the ground following motor vehicle accidents, and that even in the snow, the unit can detect a body’s heat.
