The theme for the month of November is Favorite Actors, and the schedule of screenings is as follows: Nov. 4, “Call Northside 777” (1948), starring James Stewart; on Nov. 11, “Pride of the Marines” (1945), starring John Garfield; and on Nov. 18, “Act of Violence” (1949), starring Van Heflin. Program celebrates founding of Marine Corps The Waldwick Public Library will present “United States Marine Corps: The Few, the Proud…” on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Founded on Nov. 10, 1775, the USMC is the oldest branch of the United States Armed Forces. As the corps celebrates its 235th birthday, Dr. James P. Kane will recall its glorious history in a lively, one-hour slide lecture. The program will include the colorful traditions of the corps, its special place in the American story, and the incomparable mystique that bonds for life those who have worn the Globe and Anchor and earned the right to call themselves Marines. A former superintendent of schools, Dr. James P. Kane is currently an adjunct professor of education who served as a Marine infantry officer in the famed First Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. Recyclable pickups updated The 2010 Waldwick municipal calendar contains a misprint regarding the dates for the collection of commingled (glass, aluminum, and plastic) recyclable materials. These recyclables will be collected on Nov. 3 and 17, and Dec. 1, 15, and 29. Residents are asked to make note of these dates. Country Fair set The Waldwick United Methodist Church’s 47th Annual Country Fair will be held Saturday, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair will feature jewelry, gift baskets, pickles and cheese, chocolates, baked goods, collectibles, needles and pins, and a craft cottage. Free rabies clinic scheduled The borough’s annual rabies clinic for dogs and cats, sponsored by the board of health, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the DPW garage, 19 Industrial Park. A certified veterinarian will inoculate dogs (on a leash) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cats, which must be in a carrier, will be inoculated between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Auxiliary to meet The Waldwick Valley Auxiliary will meet Nov. 3 at the Waldwick United Methodist Church, 25 Franklin Turnpike. Pasta Dinner supports station renovation On Nov. 20, the Waldwick Community Alliance will host its Pasta Dinner, a fundraiser to benefit the renovation project at the Waldwick Train Station. The dinner, which will be held at Waldwick High School, will be prepared by the WCA Kitchen Crew. Tickets are $12 for adults, and $6 for children under 12. The dinner will include pasta, sausage and peppers, meatballs, salad, cheeses, beverages, and dessert. Book Club to discuss ‘Olive Kitteridge’ The Waldwick Library Book Club will discuss “Olive Kitteridge” by Elizabeth Strout on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7:15 p.m. Thirteen linked tales from Strout present a heartwrenching portrait of ordinary coastal Mainers living lives of quiet grief intermingled with flashes of human connection. Holiday cake and pie fundraiser set The Friends of the Waldwick Library organization is offering gourmet cakes and pies for the holidays. The cakes and pies, provided by Carousel Cakes Bakery, are available at discount prices. These specialty desserts retail for $40 in gourmet shops, but can be ordered through the Waldwick Library at a cost of $15 per pie and $17 per cake. Black and white mousse, carrot, New York blackout, New York cheese, and mousse supreme are among the cake offerings; pie selections include coconut custard, Toll House, pumpkin, pumpkin cheese, pecan, and a variety of fruit pies. The deadline for placing orders for Thanksgiving is Saturday, Nov.13 for pickup on Nov. 23; the deadline for placing orders for Christmas is Saturday, Dec. 11 for a Dec. 22 pickup. Operation Reassurance available The Waldwick Police Department’s Operation Reassurance program is one of the most successful in the area. This program is open to all Waldwick residents ages 55 and older. The program requires the participant to call police headquarters by a prearranged time each day. If the individual fails to call, a communications officer will try to make contact with that person. If there is no answer, a police officer will be dispatched to check on the welfare of that person.
