Stroud and her fellow Rotarians are now encouraging local students to apply for the exchange program. Each year, over 8,100 students between the ages of 15and-a-half and 18 participate in a Rotary International Youth Exchange programs in over 100 countries. Successful applicants rank in the top 25 percent of their class, exhibit excellent study habits, and are exemplary citizens of their community. This experience provides an opportunity for the students to become ambassadors of their country and Rotary International. The short-term program involves a one-on-one exchange during the summer months. The American student is matched with a foreign student and the two students spend a few weeks as guests in each others’ homes. Only students whose families are capable and willing to host a foreign student are eligible to participate. Students in good academic standing who are between the ages of 15 and 18-and-a-half at the time of their departure for the host country are eligible. All students are selected by Rotarians for the program. The students are responsible for their own medical, incidentals, phone, clothes, and extended approved travel.
