Outlook dims for summer recreation program
Waldwick’s popular summer recreation program will not be offered this year unless residents turn out in droves to register their children by June 1. According to Borough Administrator Gary Kratz, as of last Friday only 17 children from 11 families had signed up for the program, with 11 children signing up for tennis. “I am extremely disappointed,” said Kratz. “We had all very positive responses. The council authorized me to put together a program provided it could be funded on a fee basis. We did lots of advertising and went to the schools. We just don’t seem to be getting the response,” he added. Kratz said that 200 registrants are needed for the program, which will be sited at Borough Park and HCA Park on West Saddle River Road. Eighty youngsters are needed for the tennis program. The fee is $100 per participant for the four-week offering. Last summer, when the cost was $20 per child for a fiveweek program, 371 children participated in the camp and 93 in tennis. Previous to 2009, the program was offered free of charge. The camp offers a balanced program of physical activities, including soccer and kickball, along with arts and crafts projects taught also by certified teachers. Each recreation site is supervised by a fully-certified teacher with assistance from teenage counselors. Applications for either program are posted on the borough web site www.waldwicknj.org, and they may be picked up at borough hall. The funding for the camp was eliminated from the 2010 municipal budget as a cost savings measure following a last-minute reduction of $450,286 in the state energy tax payments. “We had to reexamine what was a necessity, and while the program was nice and it benefited a great number of people, it is not a necessity,” Kratz said. The borough pool’s traditional opening was also affected by the budget cuts and will not be open for Memorial Day weekend. The pool will open on Saturday and Sunday, June 19 and 20, and will begin its full-time schedule once school is out for the summer on June 23. It will open daily at least until school opens in September, Kratz said, and possibly until Labor Day. A new operator has been contracted to run the refreshment stand, and Kratz said he has promised to provide items “with a special flare.” Pool badges for Waldwick residents are $55 for adults, $50 for children 4-17 years old, and $45 for seniors 62 and older. Pool memberships are also available to non-residents at $150 each. This fee applies for all groups except children ages three years or younger, who are admitted free. Previous badge holders may download a registration form from www.waldwicknj.org. The form and payment may be returned by mail. First-time registrants will need to register in person at the borough clerk’s office in order to have the photo badge taken. Photo badges will be taken at the clerk’s office until the pool opens, tentatively scheduled for June 23. Call the clerk at (201) 652-5300, extension 236 or 238, for information.
