Ho-Ho-Kus
Stimulus grant to cover cost of Lakewood Avenue trees
by Jennifer Crusco The Ho-Ho-Kus Council last week authorized Mayor Thomas Randall to execute a grant agreement with the State of New Jersey for a $7,000 2009 Business Stimulus Fund Grant that will be used to reimburse the Ho-Ho-Kus Shade Tree Commission’s expenditure to replant trees along Lakewood Avenue. The governing body voted on the resolution at its work session last week to expedite the process. Commission member Kim Mitchell, who wrote the grant application, pointed out that older municipalities tend to have a lot of trees that have declined, leaving organizations such as hers to devote their entire budgets to pruning and maintaining older, hazardous trees, rather than earmarking some funds to acquiring and installing new plantings. Mitchell noted that the focus of the borough’s commission was rebuilding the tree inventory on Lakewood Avenue, where most of the trees – including hornbeams and pin oaks – have already been installed. The grant, she explained, was intended to be a reimbursement for the local project. “This is a nice opportunity to make headway; 26 or 27 trees were added,” she said. Before the replacement program began, she said there were few trees left on Lakewood. “Many were taken out and we never had the funds to replace them.” Mitchell explained the importance of mixing the species of trees in a given area, noting that diversity helps avoid
large die-offs in years when diseases or insect destruction affect one particular tree species. Ho-Ho-Kus has achieved Tree City USA status for the last 10 years. That accomplishment, Mitchell said, greatly enhanced the borough’s chances of receiving the grant. The Tree City USA website states that this program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, and “provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs.” (continued on page 25)
