Annual Ducky Derby ‘on track,’ adoptions encouraged
by Jennifer Crusco The Ho-Ho-Kus Recreation Commission’s annual Ducky Derby Day will be held on Saturday, June 5, this year, and borough officials report that the event is on track. At a recent council session, Mayor Thomas Randall noted that Ducky Derby Day organizers began the 2010 operation with limited resources, and immediately began working to line up potential sponsors. “I spoke with (Recreation Director) Ed Gartner,” Randall said, acknowledging that this annual event cannot take place without funding. “Ed says we have the funds on hand, and have preliminary sponsors, so the event can take place without public expense.” Councilman John Mongelli pointed out the event was intended to be self-funding. Offering a bit of background on the derby – a race featuring rubber ducks -- Councilman Kevin Crossley said, “John (Mongelli) and I saw information about this event at a League of Municipalities meeting. It was being done in Maine, and the idea was to hold the event as a fundraiser for recreation, not for the taxpayers to fund it.” Councilman Doug Troast added that the derby is intended to be a recreation commission event geared toward individuals who may not be involved with sports. “Yes. It’s a combination of things,” Crossley agreed. “I’m pleased it’s on track, and at no cost,” Randall added. This year’s event will be held on the Ho-Ho-Kus Town Green beginning at 1 p.m., when food vendors will be selling lunch fare. From 2 to 6 p.m., participants are invited to enjoy carnival rides, vendors’ booths, and information kiosks featuring borough organizations. The derby will be held at 5 p.m. An estimated 1,500 rubber ducks will be placed in the HoHo-Kus Brook for a race to the finish. The owner of the first duck to cross the finish line will take first prize: dinner for six courtesy of the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern and a youth mountain bike from Ridgewood Cycle Shop. The owner of the last place duck, dubbed the “slacker quacker,” will also receive a prize. Duck adoptions are now being accepted at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office recently hosted a graduation ceremony for the inaugural class of the BCSO’s High School Citizen’s Police Academy. Sheriff Leo P. McGuire and Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney honored class members for their community involvement and commitment to public safety. “By completing this specialized training, these young men and women have demonstrated that the safety and security of our citizens is major priority,” said County Executive McNerney. “The information they gained from the academy will help them better understand how law enforcement works. I applaud their spirit of public service and leadership and I believe we will see good things from these students in the future.” In addition to the County Executive and Sheriff, Class President Andrew Jimenez, Class Vice President Katherine Lupardi and Class Member Michael Castellano spoke on behalf of the graduating class. The academy is modeled after the BCSO’s popular Citizen’s Police Academy for adults.
