Paving projects, streetscape falling into place
by Jennifer Crusco This summer, the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus plans to have Schifano Construction Corporation of Middlesex pave four streets. A borough official recently reported that the paving project is expected to take place shortly after the streetscape work winds down in the borough’s business district. Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Administrator Don Cirulli noted that the streets to be paved this year include Warren Avenue from Sheridan Avenue to Edgewood Drive, Sycamore Avenue between Warren Avenue and Enos Place, Enos Place between Sheridan and Elmwood avenues, and Addison Place. Schifano Construction emerged as the low-bidder in the recent cooperative call for resurfacing proposals. Ramsey is the lead agency for the co-op, which includes multiple Bergen County municipalities. The estimated price for the Ho-Ho-Kus paving work is $1,469,434. Cirulli noted that the borough is now making arrangements with the contractor, and the Schwanewede Hals, the borough’s engineering firm, is currently working out project details. Plans now call for the paving to be carried out during July and August, when there is no school traffic in the area. The administrator also reported that current projections show the streetscape could be finished in early July, weather permitting. Conquest Industries, LLC, began the streetscape project in fall of 2009. Phases I and II were combined during the bidding process, and are being carried out concurrently. The project includes the installation of paver sidewalks designed in a basket-weave pattern, paver insets in the crosswalks, and the installation of additional Victorian-style street lights. The current portion of the streetscape includes both sides of Sheridan Avenue from Franklin Turnpike to Warren Avenue; and, on Orvil Court, the realignment of curbs, the addition of brick pavers, and the redirection of some parking to include some angled spaces. Some additional space will be added to the Ho-Ho-Kus Town Green, and concrete tree vaults will be added to the east side of Sheridan. This spring, the contractor also installed a pipe for storm drain on the section of Warren Avenue from Sycamore to Sheridan. The current phases of construction include the realignment of curbs and sidewalks to meet Bergen County’s design plans, which are to be completed at a future date. The county’s plans reportedly involve squaring off the intersection where Franklin Turnpike meets Maple and
Sheridan avenues. Conquest Industries, LLC, submitted a base bid of $524,796 for Phases I and II. Ho-Ho-Kus previously received a $150,000 grant for Phase I and a $175,000 grant for Phase II. These grants do not require the borough to provide matching funds. In 2009, the borough received a $200,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s 2010 Municipal Aid Program. The council decided to dedicate that money to current streetscape expenses, rather than to the proposed third phase of the plan. Phase III, which would include Warren Avenue and part of Sycamore, is currently on hold.
Who’s the boss? Students rule for a day
Ho-Ho-Kus Public School students Peter Edelson and Victoria Rodriguez recently became Superintendent of the Day and Principal of the Day. The students started by introducing the second through fourth grade spring concert. They visited classrooms and asked their classmates for ideas and suggestions, including how to spruce up the courtyard. The students were treated to a special lunch with Principal Alexis Eckert, Superintendent Deborah Ferrara, and friends at a local eatery. The Ho-Ho-Kus Education Foundation supported this event through the annual fundraiser. Pictured are Victoria Rodriguez and Principal Eckert.
