Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • May 19, 2010 The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) has informed the Ramsey Police Department that it has successfully achieved Police Agency Accreditation through the NJSACOP Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. “In an attempt to increase the professionalism of the Ramsey Police Department, it was decided to seek accreditation,” said Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney. “It was a long and difﬁcult journey. Each member of the department did their part in the accreditation process. The fact that ofﬁcers accepted, and did not reject the accreditation concept, made it much easier. It was a sense of accomplishment when we ﬁnally received our accreditation. The Ramsey Police Department is also preparing for our re-accreditation three years from now.” The RPD entered into the two year self-assessment phase in 2007 and successfully completed the assessment in 2009. At the conclusion of the self-assessment, the RPD successfully completed the ﬁrst phase: an off-site ﬁle review. This led to the on-site assessment by a team of CALEA assessors. After a rigorous two day review of policies and procedures and inspections, the Ramsey Police Department successfully completed the on-site portion of the assessment. An accreditation program has long been recognized as a means of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. Accreditation is the certiﬁcation by an independent reviewing authority that an entity has met speciﬁc requirements and prescribed standards. Schools, universities, and hospitals are some of the most well known organizations that are required to maintain accreditation. In addition, law enforcement agencies in New Jersey can now attain accredited status through the NJSACOP Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission. Accreditation is a progressive and time proven way of helping law enforcement agencies calculate and improve their overall performances. Participating agencies conduct a thorough self-analysis to determine how existing operations can be adapted to meet these objectives. When the procedures are in place, a team of trained assessors veriﬁes that applicable standards have been successfully implemented.
