Claire Barnett wins recognition award
by John Koster Claire Barnett, a sixth grade science teacher at Allendale’s Brookside School, has received the congratulations of the Allendale Board of Education for winning the 2010 Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award. Barnett graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor’s degree in biology, and attended the University of Minnesota, where she received a master’s degree in ecology and evolution. She also holds a state of New Jersey certification as a teacher of biological science. The administration credits Barnett with increased student achievement for the core curriculum content standards through a learning-focused environment. She has served as public relations coordinator of the district for the past three years, and as yearbook co-advisor or advisor for four years. Barnett is the founder of the Brookside Environmental Club, and has been the club’s faculty advisor since 2007. The educator has also attended the Honeywell Institute

for Ecosystems Education conducted by the New Jersey Audubon Society and was awarded a Honeywell Educators at Space Camp Scholarship to attend the Space Academy for Educators program at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, in 2008. She has also received an educator fellowship from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foun-
dation to participate in an Earthwatch Institute Research Expedition conducted by the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation. The annual Governor’s Teacher Recognition Award under the Professional Recognition Act honors top teachers for their contributions to education in New Jersey.
