Third-graders from Hillside School in Allendale recently experienced a Revolutionary War reenactment, a tour of a

local historical home, and a tribute to local veterans. More than 100 third-graders visited The John Fell House on
Franklin Turnpike. Concerned Citizens of Allendale, the non-profit group that owns the home, hosted the event. After a flag-raising ceremony that honored local veterans Bud Blide and Stiles Thomas, Allendale Mayor Vince Barra read a proclamation that declared April 22 to be Freedom Day in Allendale to honor Revolutionary War hero John Fell. Dressed in colonial garb, Raoul Mallalieu and other members of the Heard’s Brigade re-enacted the arrest of John Fell who was taken from his house by 25 armed British loyalists on April 22, 1777 and held as a prisoner of war for more than eight months. The students also had a chance to see the first floor of the home, tour the grounds, and plant a tree donated by Rohsler’s Allendale Nursery.

Can You Help?
Our hat’s off to the members of the Wyckoff Seniors for their collections. We also thank Mutual Service Organization (MSO) for the food collection. Marjorie was perplexed when her six-year old daughter, Julianna, complained of nausea and dizziness. Julianna’s symptoms, which included a poor appetite, prompted a visit to the doctor. Several trips to the pediatrician left them baffled, until some tests came back and they learned that Julianna had leukemia. Marjorie told us that was the worst day of her life and that she just cried and cried. Marjorie is a single mom who had been getting by with the help of her parents and friends. The diagnosis was emotionally crushing, and she needed help with so many things: getting her life reorganized to deal with many trips to the oncologist and to treatments, 4-29-09 karen/janine working things out with Julianna’s school, dealing with health insurance problems, and emotionally managing EmmanuelHelp2x.75(4-29-09) the crisis that had suddenly been thrust upon her. An ECF 3 x .75 caseworker quickly stepped in to help Marjorie. In almost no time at all, she was able to deal more effectively with what was in front of her, and with her overwhelming fear. Our volunteers began a monthly food delivery, Marjorie got connected to community resources, bills got paid, and insurance company problems were resolved. Marjorie tells us, “I am not out of the woods yet. We have many medical issues to deal with, but we’re able to meet the challenges and I do not feel all alone in this. Thank you so much for all of your help!” If you want to help us continue to meet the many challenges our families face, please contribute to the Family Financial Fund. Another big need: We are looking for a volunteer to deliver groceries to a family in Netcong (Sussex County) on a monthly basis. One of our families needs a new fence (6’ x 128’) for their yard. The old fence is beyond repair and is falling down. If you have a solution, please contact us. Save our van: A few years back, we were able to acquire a van due to the generosity of a local church. Since then, we have made countless deliveries of groceries and other items to families. Now we need your help to keep the van in operation (maintenance, licensing, gas, and oil). If you want to help by contributing or by organizing a fundraiser, please let us know. Help us to help others! Please attend our Wine & Art Night in Franklin Lakes at the Endless Vine on Wednesday, May 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. The suggested donation is $25, and this event will sell out quickly. Call us for details and to reserve tickets. May is Mother’s Day Month. Consider hosting an informal tea fundraiser in your home. Call us for the details. This event honors ECF Moms who shoulder quite a large load. The family Stroll-a-Thon is scheduled for Saturday, June 26 in Franklin Lakes, starting at 9 a.m. Call us for details and to reserve tickets to any of these fundraisers. We now need office volunteers at the following times: Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., Thursday from 2:30 to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. To help: Call us at (201) 612-8118 before you stop by. Please do not leave items at the center without checking with us first. Our storage space is limited. Our current hours are Monday from 10 to 1; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 to 5; and Thursday from 10 to 2. The Northern Regional Center is located at 174 Paterson Avenue, Midland Park, NJ 07432. Please visit us on the web at www. emmanuelcancer.org. As always, thank you for helping the children and their families!
