Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • May 5, 2010 Waldwick Building identifier would help firefighters Some building structures provide additional dangers to firefighters in case of an emergency. The Waldwick Council has decided to minimize that threat by requiring that identifiers be placed on buildings having certain types of roofing construction. An ordinance to that effect was introduced last month and will have a public hearing on Tuesday, May 11. The proposed ordinance requires exterior identification of all structures that utilize lightweight wood, wood truss, steel truss, composite truss, laminated wood, wood “I” beams, or any other pre-manufactured lumber as a method to construct, renovate, or alter any section of an individual structure or dwelling unit. The pre incident identification of these buildings will provide fire suppression crews with critical strategic and tactical information to be utilized during firefighting operations and significantly enhance the safety of fire suppression personnel operating at emergency incidents, according to the ordinance. It would apply to all structures consisting of truss or pre-manufactured building components not currently regulated for identification within the ‘Current” New Jersey Edition of the Uniform Construction Code and International Fire Code. Once the ordinance is approved, all structures containing engineered lumber would be required to display the reflective symbol affixed to the following locations: Primary Location will be the electrical meter; in the event the electrical meter is inside the structure the Secondary Location will be the area of the gas meter plainly visible. In the event the gas meter is inside the building, the Third and Final Location will be the garage door. The reflective symbol would be applied by the Construction Official/Fire Official or designee and would be a condition of the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy in new construction and the Certificate of Acceptance in other than new construction. The Construction Official and the Fire Official will be charged with enforcing the ordinance, with a $250 fine set for either refusing to affix the symbol or for removing or tampering with it. The homeowner is charged with assuring the integrity of the reflective symbol and would have to request a new one from the building department if the symbol is removed, damaged or fades over time.
