Club to discuss Shaffer/Barrows novel The Waldwick Library will host a discussion of “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows on Thursday, May 13 at 7:15 p.m. The German occupation of the Channel Islands, recalled in letters between a London reporter and a gaggle of Guernsey islanders, is the engrossing subject of this lively debut novel. Presenting itself as cozy fiction, the novel quickly evinces a far more serious, and ambitious, intent. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk. The library’s book club welcomes new members and drop-ins, regardless of residency. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Call (201) 652-5104. The state’s budget deficit and homeowners facing decreasing property values and high unemployment have resulted in enormous pressures on schools to reduce their budgets. I was the treasurer of a large church in Manhattan which had to go through a sizable budget reduction and am currently on the board of a small private college going through the same process. At the same time, I want to help maintain NHRHS’s stellar reputation. “My experience in the finance industry and on the boards of many not-for-profits would be an asset to NHRHS as it goes through an extremely difficult time. My real strength is that I have gone through this type of change with other organizations.” He added, “State aid is gone; property owners do not want their taxes raised; teachers want to keep their jobs; and students want to have all the resources and courses that they always had. Unfortunately, everyone cannot get everything because state aid is gone. In most corporations that I have been in, the change is done with an axe: ‘Everyone loses 10 percent. Make it work.’ In the college that I am on the board of, the change was effected with careful listening and love. I hope to bring that approach to NHRHS.” design/build Horizon Landscape & Irrigation Craftsmen has been creating and maintaining beautiful landscapes for over 35 years.
