Seniors host historical romance writer The Ho-Ho-Kus Seniors will host historical romance author JoAnn Ainsworth on Tuesday, May 11. Ainsworth is the author of historical romance and paranormal suspense novels. She has written “Mathilda’s Song” and “Out of the Dark.” At the May 25 meeting, Domenick Panfile will sing. Panfile has just completed his first year of music study at the college level. The seniors meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in the Education Center of the Hermitage. Dessert and beverages are served at noon and programs begin at 1 p.m. Residents who are age 55 and over are welcome to attend programs and trips. For more infor-

Garden Club hosts sale, speaker The Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club will hold its annual Plant Sale on Saturday, May 15 (rain date: May 16), from 9 to noon, on the Ho-Ho-Kus Town Green at the corner of Sycamore and Franklin Turnpike. A wide variety of homegrown perennials, herbs, garden-related treasures and baked goods will be sold. Proceeds will help support the club’s Horticultural Scholarship Fund. On May 17 the club will host Master Gardener Terry Holman at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the second floor meeting room at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall. Holman will discuss Mel Bartholomew’s book on gardening strategy, “Square Foot, Raised Bed,” which will also be avail-

Vicar to present ‘Awesome, Creative God’ Father James White, parochial vicar at Saint Luke’s Church and adjunct professor of theology at Saint Elizabeth College in Morristown, will be the guest speaker at the last adult education program for 2009-10. The May 5 program will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the parish center at Saint Luke’s Parish, 340 North Franklin Turnpike. “Awesome, Creative God” will be a Bible study on the creation stories of Genesis, and will explore the biblical implications for reverence toward ourselves, others, the animal kingdom, and the need to care for the planet. Scott Fisher, Wyckoff’s Department of Public Works manager, who tends to the township’s parks, playgrounds, public areas, roads, buildings, and facilities, was praised as a “can-do man” by former Wyckoff Mayor Rich Alnor, who also commended him for his service to the community as a firefighter. “He has a good aesthetic eye and is a great problem solver,” said township Administrator Robert Shannon in making the presentation along with Alnor. Also honored was Allendale Mayor Vince Barra, whose efforts since becoming mayor in 2007 have led to the preservation of the Fell House and to the construction of a community park and special needs housing on another parcel previously slated for housing. His presentation was made by Tom Toronto, president of Bergen County United Way, who praised Barra for his longstanding commitment to preserving open space.

Chris James, a long time friend who presented the award, noted that they had often collaborated on environmental issues even though their companies compete in the marketplace. Ginny Duffy presented their award to Tom and Mary Bugel, calling them “valiant guardians of the environment.” The Bugels started Partners in Pride in Wyckoff, and Tom spearheaded the campaign to save Spring Lake from development.
