Waldwick March 31, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 The Waldwick Board of Education, in working on its tentative $26,705,040 budget for 2010-11, has dropped its plans for an addition at Traphagen School after learning the district would lose $1,304,960 in state aid. Waldwick will address the loss by reducing its building project budget, special education tuition, related services, and busing, according to John Griffin, the district’s business administrator. Late last year, school officials had planned to bring an all-day kindergarten program to the district, which would have begun as early as September of 2011. In order to facilitate this program, the district had eyed construction of a new, $5 million building designed by Joseph DiCara on Facing aid cut, district halts building plans the playground area at Traphagen School. The playground would have been moved to the basketball court, and the drop off area would have become a multi-use area that would also have been used for basketball. The new construction would have replaced the two side-by-side trailers known as Building 11. School officials believe it is not worthwhile to spend more money to repair the trailers. Griffin confirmed that no renovations are planned for them. The $5 million for the construction project would have come from capital improvement funds, rather than a new bond issue. Funds also would have been diverted from the renovation budget, and the district planned to apply for a state construction grant. The district had also expected to realize a savings as new staff members were hired for less money to replace retirees who had reached higher steps on the salary guide. According to figures released by the district, the 2010-11 budget general fund totals $25,508,205, the special revenue fund is $510,832, and the debt service fund is $686,003. State aid is being offered in the amount of $97,444. Voters will be asked to approve the tax levy of $24,134,786 in the April 20 school board and budget election. The tax increase that would be associated with the budget is expected to be released this week at a March 31 budget hearing. Model aircraft currently on exhibit at public library The scale model aircraft of Waldwick resident Thomas P. Price is currently on display at the Waldwick Library, where it will remain through April 30. Featured in the exhibit are some of the hobbyist’s favorite completed models, including three that represent airplanes with a New Jersey connection. Among the prominently displayed models are the North American Aviation F100C Supersaber that was flown by the New Jersey Air National Guard based in Atlantic City; and the Republic P-47D “Thunderbolt” marked as “Spirit of Atlantic City,” that was flown by Walker “Bud” Mahurin, a native of New Jersey. Having rediscovered fine-scale modeling as an adult, Price found that the hobby has changed dramatically over the past three decades. The crude, somewhat toy-like kits he made as a boy have been replaced by very detailed, scrupulously accurate kits that enable him to combine his interests in history and miniatures. “I am not a ‘rivet counter’ obsessed with accuracy,” he said. “I try to create reasonably accurate replicas of interesting machines in a relaxed manner that will enable me—in my imagination, at least—to fly!” Many of the models in the exhibit are available for sale; that is, for a contribution to either of the hobbyist’s two favorite charities: the Waldwick Public Library or the Waldwick Lions Club. For more information on obtaining a model, send an e-mail to TPPrice1951@Gmail.com. The library, located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick, is open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, call the library at (201) 652-5104.
