Council to formalize parking restrictions during storms
by John Koster The Allendale Borough Council has introduced an ordinance that would allow police to order residents not to park their cars at the roadside during heavy snow storms. The introduction of the ordinance at last week’s public council meeting took place after an incident during the massive snow storm earlier in the month when a police officer ordered a resident to remove his car from the curb because curbside parking during heavy snow interferes with plowing operations. The verbal volley that followed revealed that Allendale does not have an ordinance that requires residents to keep the curbs and roadsides clear of parked cars during snow storms. “We will never just ticket a car because it’s on a street, but if we find the person we will tell them to move the car,” Mayor Vince Barra said. The newly-introduced ordinance will have its public hearing and will be considered for probable adoption on April 8. In other business, the council adopted a pair of ordinances that will enable Allendale to place a lien on abandoned property for repair of visible exterior damage and another for the removal of brush, weeds, and debris so that a house cannot be sold unless the exterior is in order. Both ordinances were adopted unanimously by those council members present. Allendale Borough Administrator Gwen McCarthy also informed the council that she had been able to save the borough another $1,500 by simplifying the publication of administrative paper work.

The proposed Allendale K-8 Board of Education budget of $15,462,527 has been sent to Bergen County and will have its public hearing at Brookside School March 31 at 8 p.m. The budget calls for a general fund of $14,246,076, a special revenue fund of $183,328, and a debt service fund of $1,033,123. The budget is expected to result in a general tax levy of $13,281,213 and debt service in the amount of $498,308, for a total tax levy of $13,779,521. The budget will be presented to the borough’s registered voters on April 20. Those who attend the March 31 meeting may also hear an update on the search for a superintendent for the district. No decision had been made at press time and the interview process is still in progress. Dr. Jeralyn Caprio, the superintendent of schools, has announced her resignation and will be leaving the district in June at the end of the present school year. J. KOSTER
