Councilman decides not to run for new term
by Jennifer Crusco Gordon Hamm, who is now completing his second term on the borough council, has decided he will not seek reelection this year. “I believe I’ve tried to make a difference,” Hamm told Villadom TIMES of his service to the council. “I’ve spent six years there, and now I want to make a difference on the other side – the commercial side -- of town. I want to build up the downtown and the merchants, and I can’t do both – be there and on the council.” Hamm is a partner in the group that is now running the borough-owned Ho-Ho-Kus Inn, a landmark in the downtown business district. Hamm’s involvement in the Ho-HoKus Inn and Tavern has prompted him to recuse himself from voting on council agenda items in order to avoid conflict of interest allegations. “I’m looking forward to being in touch with all the merchants, and am working with Chuck Russo and Chip Gildea to put the Ho-Ho-Kus Chamber of Commerce back together. Hopefully, this will bring about better communication between the government and the merchants.” He added, “I’ll still be in touch with government side – I’m still involved in town.” Last September, Hamm responded to a plea for volunteers by joining the Ho-Ho-Kus Ambulance Corps. He is also a member of the Community Resource Council’s board, and serves on the foundation board at Bergen Community College and on various condo and co-op boards in Manhattan.
Hamm received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Bowling Green State University, where he is a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees. He is partner and chief operating officer of Garage Management Associates, LLC, a New York City-based parking company. Hamm is also partner in PJ Clarkes and Sidecar restaurants, and is a partner in various real estate properties. He is a trustee of Local Union 272 Pension and Welfare Funds in New York and serves on the Labor Negotiation Team for the Metropolitan Parking Association. He has served on the Ho-Ho-Kus Planning Board, and has coached local baseball and soccer teams. He is president of the Ho-Ho-Kus/Saddle River Recreation Commission, and a partner in Kidville, a child development center.

Twice-a-week garbage collection in Ho-Ho-Kus will start a little later than anticipated as the borough works to balance the additional collection costs – an estimated $3,000 per garbage truck -- incurred following the recent wind and rainstorm. Ho-Ho-Kus Mayor Thomas Randall noted that the storm and its ancillary damage led to additional garbage for which the contractor was not prepared. The additional volume and associated costs will be evened out by allowing the hauler to switch from once-a-week to twice-a-week garbage collections later in April.
Garbage collection schedule adjusted
Borough officials anticipate that the twice-a-week collections will now begin the second week in April. Residents will receive a Reverse 911 notification when the dates have been firmed up. Mayor Randall praised the department of public works for spending extra hours cutting wind damaged trees to ensure that local road would remain open to motorists. “It’s not just by luck that we fared so well,” Randall said, further noting the work of the borough’s emergency responders.
