Poetry contest winners named The Woman’s Club of Upper Saddle River has announced the winners of this year’s Poetry and Essay Contest. In the third and fourth grade poetry category, Olivia Tanchel won first place and Chiara Brady earned an honorable mention. Jacob Mendel won first place in the third and fourth grade essay category. The fifth and sixth grade poetry winner was Samantha Tanchel. The fifth and sixth grade essay winner was Thomas Hebner; Allison Naramore earned honorable mention. Jessica Levin was the winner in the seventh and eighth grade poetry category. The topic for this year’s event was “Picturing Yourself in the Year 2020.” Students were asked to predict what changes will occur in their own lives, in the country, and in the world during the next 10 years. Children in grades three through eight participated. The winners will read their work on April 6 at 7 p.m. in the adult solarium at the Upper Saddle River Library. Woman’s Club plan events The Woman’s Club of Upper Saddle River will hold its annual Baby Shower on May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Savini Restaurant in Allendale. All are welcome. Donations of baby clothing or accessories for infants up to size 2T will be donated to Strengthen Our Sisters, a shelter for battered women. This spring, members of the club will be volunteering at the Designer Show House of New Jersey, which will benefit the Cancer
Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. This event will run from April 25 through June 6. The show house is located at 4 High Meadow Road in Saddle River. Anyone interested in volunteering is invited to call (201) 669-0833. Shifts are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. The Woman’s Club will also be participating in Lord and Taylor’s Benefit Bash on April 8. Call Barbara at (201) 825-0207. Board of education to meet The Upper Saddle River Board of Education will meet on Wednesday, March 31 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the media center of the Cavallini Middle School, 392 West Saddle River Road. Club welcomes new members The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club will hold a Wine and Cheese Soiree for members on Thursday, April 8. This event will be held at 8 p.m. at a member’s home. The club fundraises and plans social events. Women from surrounding towns that do not have a Woman’s Club are welcome to join. For details, contact Denise Mercier at (201) 787-9480. Health and beauty program set Dr. Joanne Florio and Denise Mercier will offer tips on looking healthier and younger with a few changes in a daily routine on Wednesday, April 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street. The lecture will address looking younger, weight loss, energy levels, and improving overall health. Tennis Permits available for 2010 Tennis permits for the use of the USR tennis courts, located on West Saddle River Road in front of Reynolds School, are now available at borough hall. Annual Plant Sale underway The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club has begun taking orders for its Annual Plant Sale. There will be a great selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, and hanging baskets. Orders are due by April 3. Plants will be available on Saturday, May 8,
which is the day before Mother’s Day. The hanging baskets and patio planter make great Mother’s Day gifts. Proceeds will be donated to various organizations and charities within the community.
