Page 14 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • March 31, 2010 Waldwick Watch Beefsteak Dinner Fundraiser set Building Blocks Child Center of Waldwick will host its first Beefsteak Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, April 24 at 6 p.m. in the school gym at 136 Wyckoff Avenue. The event includes the beef dinner with salad, french fries, beverage, ice cream, and coffee, and a “starter kit” with auction tickets. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward the purchase of new playground equipment and to repaint the interior of the facility. Tickets are $30 per person and may be purchased at Liberty 100, 171 Franklin Turnpike, Waldwick or by calling (201) 446-7047. Music Parents host Cabaret Night The Waldwick Music Parents Association’s annual Pasta Dinner and Cabaret Night fundraiser has been set for April 23. The event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Waldwick High School, 155 Wyckoff Avenue. The cost for tickets, which include all-you-can-eat dinner and dessert, are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors and students age five and up. Children under age five will be admitted free. Entertainment will be provided by students, including the Waldwick HS/MS Jazz Express. Tickets may be purchased at the event or in advance for pickup at the door. Ticket orders may be left in the WMPA box in the high school/middle school office, or mailed to: WMPA, 11 Dow Avenue, Waldwick, NJ 07463. All proceeds benefit the performing arts programs at the Waldwick Middle & High schools and the WMPA’s scholarship fund. Book Club to discuss Greenway novel The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “White Ghost Girls” by Alice Greenway on Thursday, April 8 at 7:15 p.m. Amidst the political upheaval of Mao’s China and U.S. involvement in Vietnam, two American sisters come of age in Hong Kong in this beautiful debut novel. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk. The book club welcomes new members and drop-ins regardless of residency. Grass, brush/branch collection underway Beginning this week, all brush, branch, and grass clippings will be collected at the same time. The collection schedule will remain in effect; see the listing on the borough calendar’s March page. Leaves may be mixed with grass and must be put out the night before pickup in a trash can, plastic bag, or recy- clable paper lawn bag. All brush and branches must be placed in garbage cans and left curbside the night before pickup. A maximum of four containers will be picked up per collection day. Residents are reminded that brush and branch material left on the ground will not be picked up. Student seeks community’s assistance Local high school student Elyssa Giordano is currently in 64th place in the country for the annual Zinch March Madness $20,000 Scholarship. Giordano requests that residents visit www.waldwicknj.org/zinch.pdf to assist her in securing the scholarship. Giordano is captain of the Varsity Cheerleading Team, and a member of the Waldwick High School Academic Decathlon Team, where she performs at the varsity level. Last year, the decathlon team won at the regional, state, and national levels. This year, the team has advanced to states. She is involved in Students for Global Awareness, Heroes and Cool Kids, and the Photography Club. Films feature love triangles Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, precedes each screening. The theme for the month of April is love triangles, and the schedule: April 8, “High Society” (1956); April 15, “Intermezzo” (1939); April 22, “The Bigamist” (1953); and April 29, “The Devil and Daniel Webster” (1941). Auxiliary to host author Emily Walter Mikulewicz will address the Waldwick Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary on April 7. Her 1 p.m. talk, which is open to the public, will be held at the Waldwick Methodist Church. Handwriting analysis workshop set Handwriting expert Bernice Krieger will present a workshop on Wednesday, April 7 at 7 p.m. at the Waldwick Public Library, 19 East Prospect Street. Library offers census assistance Under the guidance of the U.S. Census Bureau, the Waldwick Public Library will serve as a designated Questionnaire Assistance Center for a period of five weeks ending Monday, April 19. A representative from the census bureau will be available to assist individuals who need help completing the 2010 census questionnaire. Hours of operation are: Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and Thursday through Saturday, 12:30 to 3 p.m. The questionnaire assistance service is free and open to the public; no appointments are necessary. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. For information, call (201) 652-5104. Lions hold fundraiser The Waldwick Lions Club has announced its Annual Gold Fundraiser. Tickets are $100 each and only 300 tickets will be sold. The winner will receive $10,000. Tickets are available at Plaza Jewelers, 10 East Prospect Street; L.A. Street Vans, 149 Franklin Turnpike; and Traffic Safety and Equipment, 457 Route 17 North in Mahwah. The winner will be announced April 22 at the Lions Club dinner at the Brownstone. The Waldwick Lions Club, now entering its 55th year of service, has donated more than $750,000 to sight related charities and various community needs. The local club support Saint Joseph’s School for the Blind, Camp Marcella for Blind Children, The Seeing Eye Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and the Lions Eye Bank of New Jersey.
