March 24, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Area New Rotary Club organized in Allendale/Saddle River A new Rotary Club in Allendale and Saddle River has gotten off to a good start, with expectations that membership will grow as word spreads of its existence. Twenty members are needed to become a fully chartered club. Since its founding last month by Wyckoff/Midland Park Rotarian Robert Traitz, the fledgling club already has 15 members. The group meets Wednesday mornings at 8 a.m. at the office of Chiropractic on the Saddle River at 4 Barnstable Court, Saddle River (next to the Saddle River Inn). In this short period of time, the club has already taken on a couple of projects: helping start a recreational program at the Governor Paterson Senior Citizen Home in Paterson, raising funds so a burn victim from Poland who suffered a tragic accident while on vacation here can be outfitted with posthesis; and joining the Shelter Box project to provide temporary living quarters for earthquake victims in Haiti. According to Traitz the thrust of the new breakfast club is to offer opportunities for service at a more convenient time and place than now available with existing clubs. Bergen Highlands in Ramsey meets for lunch; Ridgewood’s clubs meet at breakfast and lunch; Sunset Central Bergen meets in Glen Rock for dinner as does Oakland/Franklin Lakes’ club. Hopes are that the morning schedule will entice Waldwick, Ho-Ho-Kus and other area residents to join. Rotary Clubs offer an opportunity to build lifelong friendships and experience the personal fulfillment of providing volunteer service. Rotarians give out scholarships, hold food drives for local food banks, assist the families of servicemen and women fighting abroad, dig wells and build schools all over the world, clean their communities, and even prepare young people for successful futures through Interact (high school), React (middle school) and Rotaract (college) programs. Traitz, who chairs the young people programs for the district, said there are 35 Interact and 12 React clubs in the area. He said he anticipates that at least a Northern Highlands chapter can be organized sometime in the future. The Rotary Club is composed of 1.5 million influential men and women who enjoy one another’s company during weekly meetings and at other venues, to address local and global concerns. Each member can have an impact on the community and the world, because each club designs, develops, and implements its own projects. While polio has been Rotary’s signature global effort over the last 100 years, projects range from providing access to clean water, to scholarships, to microfinance, to literacy, and beyond.
