Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • March 24, 2010 Saddle River Valley Skrivanek earns Lions International’s highest honor David Skrivanek, a long-time Northvale resident and member of the Saddle River Valley Lions Club, recently received a Melvin Jones Fellowship from the Lions Clubs International Foundation. The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the highest honor bestowed by Lions International and is awarded to those who demonstrate practical application of the Lions motto: “We serve.” The honoree was a member of the Northvale Lions Club, where he served in several leadership roles, including president, vice president, secretary, director, and committee chair. In 2003, he joined the Saddle River Valley Lions Club, which he has also served as president and secretary. In addition, he has served as zone chairperson for Lions District 16A and chairperson of the Vision Crusade Foundation Eye Mobile. Born and raised in Kearney, Skrivanek graduated from Monmouth College and the RCA Institute of Electronic Training with a bachelor of science in electronics. He and his wife of 42 years, Janice, have two sons, David and Jason. Forty years ago, the owner of the house he purchased in Northvale introduced Skrivanek to the Lions and its mission to help the blind and visually impaired. Since that time, he has devoted his life to the organization’s cause. He currently serves on the board of directors of Saint Joseph’s School for the Blind in Jersey City. His business, Repro-Tronics, Inc. in Westwood, designs and builds products for the blind. As a member of the Saddle River Valley Lions Club, Skrivanek actively participates in all the fundraising projects. He particularly enjoys the annual Lions Club Carnival held during Memorial Day week, where he works on the fire truck race booth. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service organization numbering more than 1.4 million members in over 180 countries. As a Melvin Jones Fellow, Skrivanek becomes part of an international network of recipients. The Melvin Jones Fellowship recognizes an individual’s commitment to helping others to lead richer, fuller lives, and one who embodies traits generally associated with humanitarianism, such as generosity, compassion, and concern for others. The Saddle River Valley Lions Club has raised and donated over $1,740,000 to various sight and other healthrelated charities since being chartered by Lions International in 1958. The club’s commitment to helping the blind and visually impaired dates back to the 1920s, when Helen Keller challenged the international organization to become “Knights for the Blind.” The local club also supports civic organizations, and youth and educational programs in Mahwah, Ramsey, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River.
