Ho-Ho-Kus March 17, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 9 Mild weather allows continued work on streetscape by Jennifer Crusco The recent break in the winter weather allowed additional work to continue on the Ho-Ho-Kus streetscape. Early last week, the contractor was laying pipe for a storm drain on Warren Avenue from Sycamore to Sheridan. A borough official reported that, if the mild temperatures continue, the next step would be for the crew to install the brick pavers on Orvil Court. Work on the streetscape began in the fall of 2009, and had been on hold for the winter until last week’s thaw. Last year, the borough received a $200,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s 2010 Municipal Aid Program. The funds will soon become available to the borough, and local officials have decided to dedicate the money to current streetscape expenses, rather than to the third phase of the plan. Phase III would include Warren Avenue and part of Sycamore. Originally, the $200,000 was earmarked for the third phase of the Sheridan Avenue streetscape program. However, late last year, Mayor Thomas Randall asked the council to consider whether the funds should be used to extend the existing project or be used as a form of tax relief to defray the cost of the current phases of the streetscape. Several council members said they believed the grant should be used to cover existing costs. Councilman Lee Flemming asked if this use of the funds would effectively cancel Phase III of the streetscape. Mayor Randall said the third phase would not necessarily be halted. Phases I and II of the streetscape are currently underway. These current phases are being carried out by Conquest Industries, LLC, which submitted a base bid of $524,796. The borough has already received a $150,000 grant for Phase I and a $175,000 grant for Phase II. These grants do not require the borough to provide matching funds. The improvements now underway include both sides of Sheridan Avenue from Franklin Turnpike to Warren Avenue. Curbs and sidewalks will be realigned to meet Bergen County’s design plans, which are to be completed at a future date. The county’s plans reportedly involve squaring off the intersection where Franklin Turnpike meets Maple and Sheridan avenues. The work on Orvil Court includes the realignment of curbs and the redirection of some parking to include some angled spaces. Some additional space will be added to the Ho-Ho-Kus Town Green, and concrete tree vaults will be added to the east side of Sheridan. Plans also call for the installation of paver sidewalks designed in a basket-weave pattern, paver insets in the crosswalks, and the installation of additional Victorianstyle street lights. Maple Avenue, North Franklin Turnpike, East Franklin Turnpike, and a portion of Warren Avenue are also being considered for future improvements. Library accepts exhibits The Worth-Pinkham Memorial Library invites local artists, collectors or area residents with interesting collections to contact the library if they would be interested in displaying their collections at the library located at 91 Warren Avenue.
