Municipal pool memberships to increase by $5
The Waldwick Council is split on whether to increase the cost of a pool badge for next summer, so Mayor Russell Litchult last week cast the tie-breaking vote to introduce an ordinance adopting the higher fee. The increase had been recommended by Borough Administrator Gary Kratz as a means of combatting higher taxes. “The higher fees offset the potential increase in taxes,” said Kratz, noting that the pool operation pays for itself. In 2009, operating costs were $74,592, while pool-
Career workshop offered at borough’s public library
Jan Mark Schwibner
The majority of unemployed professionals quietly wonder where to begin their job search. Jan Mark Schwibner will answer that question at the Waldwick Public Library on Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. In his 90-minute presentation, Schwibner will show how to develop a personal marketing plan, the single most important tool a job seeker needs to manage an effective and efficient job search. This career management professional has an extensive background in career coaching, executive search, corporate recruiting, training, education, and management. He is founder and president of CareerGrapevine, Inc. The workshop is free and open to the public; however, space is limited and advance registration is recommended. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. For more information, call (201) 652-5104.
related revenues amounted to $91,850. A new filtration system was installed in 2009 at a cost of $77,584 and $30,100 is budgeted for new fencing in 2010. Under the proposed ordinance, resident badges purchased before Memorial Day will be $45 for senior citizens, $50 for children, and $55 for adults. The $5 increase is expected to generate an additional $6,500, according to Assistant Borough Administrator Jordan Battisti. A $10 premium would still be charged for badges purchased after Memorial Day. “It worked out pretty well. We got a number of people to pre-registed,” Kratz said. Members of the Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department and WALVAC and their immediate families are exempt from annual pool permit fees. Non-resident seasonal tags will remain at $150. Councilwoman
Anita Bozzo noted that even though fewer out-of-town residents had joined due to the much higher fee last year, the revenue was actually greater. She asked that a greater effort be made to reach out to neighboring communities, including Ridgewood, to try to get out-of-town memberships. Councilman Frank Palladino said he felt the extra revenue is “minuscule” compared to the “bad will” being generated in town. “It does not warrant it,” he said. At a previous meeting, resident Al Coldon made a plea to exempt senior citizens from the increase. “Most people with children can afford the pool fees. For seniors, $5 or $10 means a lot. Leave the seniors alone for everything,” he said. “You have to take everybody into account. People with children could complain,” Bozzo countered.
